I don't usually post in these threads. But do you think its too late in the season to be planting out pumpkin plants that produce normal sized pumpkins?

Jane I would say yes but it's worth a try if you got some young plants they really slow down when it's cold

This is the best way to photograph this plot, from the outside! This is two plants here, the 978 and 427, these plants have just about filled this bed now (39ft x 16.5ft)

This plant at the bottom has a couple of fruit growing on it, I'll have to cull one soon when I decide which to keep. The fruit on the polystyrene is is the size of a football roughly.

Further up the bed on the 427 plant I have three fruit growing, the best pictured below but it is a long fruit.

The 847 plant, planted late after my taters had come out is growing away well and the main vine is around 20ft now, a nice triangular shape with two fruit growing on it.

The two fruits on the 847, grapefruit sized.

The 1271 plant has filled its patch now and I have two fruits growing on it now.

The two fruits on the 1271, the one on the polystyrene is my preferred one as it is on the main vine, the other is on a secondary.

Blimey Steve, you've got a serious case of Pumpkinitis there! :)

You have some pretty serious looking contenders.

Well, yes and no! More a victim of circumstance. :snork:

At the start of the year I only planned on a semi-serious attempt to grow a 500lb plus pumpkin in the one big patch. The 500lb'er has been my ambition right from the start a few years back. So I planned to grow two plants only in the big bed.

But early season this year I cleared a "dumping ground/work area" on the plot, pulled up and disposed of the carpets and dug it over, ready for me to build a new large polyhouse, but I ran out of time for the building of that for this season. So what to do with the new ready dug ground? Well I thought, I'll plant another pumpkin there as I have spares!

Even after that, I still had spare plants and after giving one of them to Allan on here (where are you Allan, how is the plant?), and giving two away to plot neighbours at the allotments, I still had one left.

Now I know we all grow things and lots of us say to ourselves, "If I have too many, I can always compost them", but in all reality we are not murderers but nurturers, so when bed space became available after the potato harvest, the fourth plant went in.

There you have it...."Victim of circumstance" I am..:yahoo:

                Steve...:)

PS..I think Richard has this one sewn up already this year, he is already 100lb ahead, and fair play to him for that!

                  :fingers crossed: Steve:thumbsup:

                  Now I know I can't grow a mahoosive one but I too had 3 spares,plus my 'climbing' one:rolleyespink:

I had no space so to my shame I shuvved them in containers and forgot about them:doh:...they seem to be fairing OK with my neglect...
