Runner beans

    Hi all...........just harvested my broad beans and peas which have been blanched, bagged & placed in the freezer, can I do the same thing with runner beans and for that matter, any other vegies? Kind regards Dave .

    Yep, they'll freeze fine, same way, blanch them first :)

    If you run out of freezer space you can salt them down in tubs :)

    Yes, you can do it with beans but there are a number of veg that don't freeze well. If you're thinking of doing other veg then it would be best to ask about them individually. :blue thumb:

    Thanks Zigs.....How about Parsnip, can they be blanched and frozen too? As for Turnips I expect that like Leeks, they can be left well into winter & picked as needed! This last year I had to pick the remainder of last years turnips to prepare the land for this years planting but they did not keep very long!!! How come turnips can be purchased all year round in the shops, are they somehow preserved in this country or are they imported continually? Regards Dave.

    Parsnips can be left in the ground all winter and picked as needed - the only problem is when the ground gets frozen it's difficult to dig them out without damage.

    Again these will keep in the ground over-winter, for a long period and pulled as needed. You can eat them as small baby ones in the summer as well.

    Not sure about imports, have you looked on the packaging it should say the country of origin.

      A lot of 'out of season' crops are imported and packaging is also treated with a gas to help preserve them.

        I know they use a modern equivalent of clamping to keep Carrots fresh, covering them with something till they're needed. Maybe they do with Turnips & Parsnips too :dunno:

        I have frozen parsnips before, mainly because the one i'd pulled was too big to eat all at once.
