Good evening all, I am offering my begging bowl for unwanted/excess seeds for this years seed swap.
If anyone has any seeds to contribute, whether they join the swap or not all will be welcomed, flowers , veg , herbs etc.
Please p.m. me for my address.
I will be starting a thread by the end of the month for those who wish to join the swap. and including a copy of the rules, they will be the same as last year if anyone would like an early glimpse.

Pam, I'm sadly addicted to collecting Salvia Patens "Oxford and "Cambridge" seeds. I can't stop so I will send you some for others to enjoy,

I'm rather addicted to collecting seed of a few Salvia species too!
PM me an address Pam and I'll send you a parcel to get things going.

I was given lots of sweet pea seeds earlier this year but never got time to plant them and to be honest don't really think I will use them all. Also got loads of sunflower seeds and probably a few others I won't use. They're all packet seeds though, not harvested by me, so are they still ok for the swap?

I would think most seeds have a viability of a year or two, most commercial seeds have 2 or 3 years "use by dates", although some seeds do have to be sown immediately you don`t really see those for sale on seed displays.

They are lovely. Are they annuals or perenials?

Me too, but their seed production "rate" disappoints me - one seed per flower I think?

Annuals (although there are other varieties of Salvia that are perennials, some of which come true from seed). I find that Oxford and Cambridge don't make a lot of height (in the one season), although that's true of quite a lot in my garden, its more exposed than, say, a town garden, so others may have more success (as may I when my hedges get to "operational height"!)

Yes they're all within date, I was just asking if the seed swap was for seeds people had harvested themselves or if commercial seeds were included. So now I know they are I'll get some in the post to you :blue thumb:

Perennials, although they're a little borderline. I just lift my tubers in the autumn, drop them in a pot and stick in the shed for the winter.

They don't like you do they!!:heehee:

Oxford / Cambridge Blue? I didn't know you could get away with that ... presumably you get a much bigger plant in year 2?

Do you get more? (I meant one seed per individual flower, not per flower-head)

Just been out to pick a flower and 2 unripe seed pods. 4 seeds per pod if a strong , healthy specimen These are grown in MPC in a raised border and have been well fed with B,F and B at the start. Many are 80cms tall and a good deep blue.
Let me know if you would like some - P1050423.JPG P1050425.JPG I will have plenty,
                Jenny

They form a long white tuber which will survive if not frozen ( a bit like a Dahlia I think) so will be around in year 2. I wouldn't think they are a long lived perennial though, but are so easy to propagate from seed,
