Hi Howard......Ellies reply above really sums up the problems with inward breeding of pedigree dogs. My wife has kept cockers all her life they are a great dog - a little crazy , but also a professional comedian and the best friend you will ever have. We bought our latest Molly just over one year ago ( just listening , Mrs H has just locked Molly in the kitchen downstairs for being naughty  ). Please please please avoid the puppy farms , breeders who are in it for a quick profit. The lady dogs and the breed suffer from their money grubbing practices . I would go for a rescue dog :doggieshmooze:

      Harry she's lovely

She's bringing back memories of my Cocker Sam, who we lost when he was 17 years old, mind you by this stage he was virtually blind, but still had the ability to swipe a piece of bacon and leave you just holding the two slices of bread in your hands, as he strolled by!

Ellie , Cockers can show the Artful Dodger a thing or two when it comes to stealing ! When I have a shower Molly always comes and takes a sock or my shirt . I don't have a matching pair of socks these days ! :doggieshmooze:

Awww Molly is gorgeous!!!! :wub2: Just to mention also if you have never had a Cocker before, their coat need attention as it keeps growing so they need brushing/trimming on a regular basis. Wonderful little dogs, very 'focused' on what they want to do.

            Here's my Robbie.

I think I'm right in saying that 'Cockers' can have problems with their ears and eyes. Having said that, we've never had such problems with ours. We bought ours from a breeder in North Somerset (I forget exactly where) and were as sure as we could be that everything was right. We paid £600 for her, ten years ago, which was (and still is) a lot of money, but we specifically wanted a black or blue roan. Let me tell you, they can be VERY lively dogs. Ours goes mental if for instance I've just got home from work. She is very attentive, friendly and keen to please, which is a common trait.

                      Hi All

when I had the 5 cockers , main problem was ear infections in the end they all wore bobbles to keep the ears up and let the air in.
Another smelly problem was the most common inhabitant of skin folds is a yeast called Malassezia pachydermatis in the folds of skin under the bottom jaw , 3 had to have a op to remove the excess folds as I tried for months with cleaning everyday and just didnt work and not very pleasant for the dogs.
Kidney disease Familial Nephropathy is also inherited but most good breeders have the dogs tested before hand as it is in inherited two of mine died of this and writing it down brings back not so happy memories (neither dog was used for breeding) drinking vast quantities of water is the first signs, not a lot the vet can do apart from flushing them out on a drip for a couple of hours and this would have to be repeated for it to work but it doesn't last very long and I would imagine stressful to the dogs
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a condition where your pet gradually looses his sight.

But saying all this one of mine lived until she 18 1/2 and her son lived till 17 1/2.
All 5 had different personalities , one would walk around a puddle the other quickly throw herself into it , one that used to go crazy at the hose pipe when switched on . another football crazy.

But all fun days ... and I do miss each one , people used to say you have 5 , but I would say back they are not Great Danes ... but they have the heart of them.

Most are bred with too much coat and most people end up shearing the whole lot off , but it makes they look dull and not shiny and silky smooth which is a shame , the working cockers have less coat so much easier to look after.

I quite agree. We tried to keep her brushed, but she hated it right from the start, especially her hind quarters. It was like trying to tame an electric shock:hate-shocked:

                          Hi Freddy

I had brushes/combs for the 3 black and a softer set of brushes for the two gold dogs they were more sensitive .. I still have all the oyster clippers and a hair driers called "Sahara" now that had some power to dry them out , each one had a bath every 5 week and if a show coming up 3 days before . I used to spend hours on grooming and trimming.
