Thanks Zigs. I will keep skimming the tops off each jar. BBE's end Nov 2014, but I assume thats if not opened earlier.
Actually I might like the Sacla basil one best, its very strong, but tastes so salty. That jar alone was £2.28 though.

I make my own pesto from scratch. thus you can control the salt.
So my recipe is: Lots of fresh basil leaves from my herb garden. hand full of broken walnuts, two to four cloves of garlic, and some very good olive oil., little salt. Put all in a food processor, and press the button, scrap, I do not mind that there are little walnut crumbs still appearing in the surrounding paste. Some folks use pine nuts instead of the walnuts, I prefer the walnuts as pine nuts are more expensive and a higher fat content.
I use what I need for that nights meal. Scrap out the rest in a small plastic freezer container, wrap well, and in the future break off what I need. It has lasted me for about a good 9 months this way, with no change of flavor.

One of my favorite ways of using pesto is: in the summer: to have thick slices of fresh tomato gently simmering in butter and salt, drizzle heavy cream around them, have pasta made and throw in 5 tablespoons of fresh pesto stirring it in to coat the pasta. Plate the dish with the pasta/pesto on the bottom and the think tomato slices with the yummy cream butter sauce on top. Yummy. truly.

If you do want to peel mushrooms you probably already have a peeler - best by far is your finger and thumb. Just pinch the peel at the bottom (ie stalk end) and pull away towards the top.

I had to think about that one for a while  but I get you now. No, I am not that kind of geezer.
                  Glad to say :)
The finger job worked well because I removed the stork. To be honest, there isn't mush room in the drawer for more gadgets anyway.
