I guess it goes to show there is always someone worse off than you !
That word was 'forgetfulness' by the way. I was thinking of abneesia at first.

My mam used to peel mushrooms too. I have absolutely no idea why, and when I asked her a few years ago, she said it was just what she knew.

No need to peel their flavour off. Perhaps it is a relic from "pre-my-parent" days, when people would often forage their own food. A mushroom, being pretty much as close to the ground as it gets, might have been wee'ed on by dogs (although that would be the very least of my concerns with wild mushrooms which, if misidentified, WILL kill you of death). The dog wee thing comes from my dad teaching me about brambles and such. You don't take them from less than knee high, as knee high or below puts them in dog wee range.

Oh.................One of our favourite pastimes as kids was the peeing contest up the brambles round the back of the rec. With careful training and preparation a good five feet was possible!!!!!!!
We didn't eat bramble pie/crumble very much as kids!

That'd be an interesting sight! :heehee:

Acceptable but not the consensus of opinion. Everyone seems to agree that you shouldn't peel mushrooms except in extreme circumstances.

Whatever for? Unless you're going to cook a meal in posh 'Veronique' style, the only reason to peel grapes is if you don't like the texture of the skins. They just need a wash. :blue thumb:

Be careful :hate-shocked:. You may give people inferiority complexes! :roflol:

Although that reminds me of what a doctor said on the radio. "As you get older the distance you can pee is not necessarily a sign of possible prostate problems. You probably remember being able to pee over the fence but now have trouble missing your shoes! That's just a sign of age." :old: :heehee:

We used to use the salt and baking soda mixture as a toothpaste as toothpaste wasn't easy to get after the war!

Inspired by @Adendoll 's link, I have done a mushroom peeling 'how to'.
Thanks to @westwales for the brilliant technique.....very effective :) :blue thumb:
                    I hope this is helpful.

                    Step 1. Acquire a mushroom !

Step 2 Snap off its stand/root/stem/stork.

Step 3. Put thumb in hole.
