My Hostas are looking tired, some some of them are starting to go brown already.

      Mine were eaten months ago:heehee:

The recent cold snap has seen a couple of the Lachenalia (which I grew from seed last winter) emerge, and the first signs of soil movement in my Ferraria. They've been dry in the greenhouse all summer to replicate a South African summer so I'll need to move them outdoors somewhere now.
Also, my Brugmansia sanguinea has loved the cooler temperatures and is loaded with buds now!

What, only for 300 years? That's nothing compared with what they're forecasting for the winter coming

And what would make it even worse is that nobody would be able to jet off to warmer climes.

Isn't there a saying that if you're going to tell a lie, you might as well make it a big one?

Well .. they've forecast Coldest / Hottest ever before (and been wrong) so maybe alternating with "for a generation" / "for 100 years" / "for 300 years" / "For supply your own value years" adds some variety in an otherwise boring day for the editor of MakeUp ...

        Yup.
An average winter/summer doesn't start mass hysteria.
Far better to say hottest/coldest since records began etc.
Much better for newspaper headlines :runforhills:

The report quoted in post #18 does not qualify it so, therefore "ever" must include all the Ice Ages in Earth's history and all sorts of stuff before that. That would be very cold indeed so I'm stocking up on tinned stuff, firewood, coal and gas cylinders (not that they'd be much good under a mile of ice).

Well the BBC weather this morning, always the pessimists so they never get it wrong , said that September / October had a 35% chance off better than average temperatures. So they were picked up on it immediately by Bill Turnbull " so its a 65% chance off being average ! ".

I hate those sort of predictions such as '50% chance of rain' meaning it will either rain or it wont rain.

Bill was being optimistic, otherwise he could have said a 65% chance of being average or worse than average.

Good god almighty I am SO fed up with weather predictions. I read we were going to have the winter to end all winters last winter. I live in Scotland and am well above sea level. Had NO frosts at all before Christmas and even after that only a couple.......never stopped raining tho. How do I remember?, because I have a horse to look after and the outside hose which I use on a daily basis for his fresh water always freezes if we have frost/minus temperatures of any note. Last winter I hardly ever needed to get water from the house supply.
I am in agreement with my neighbouring farmer who reckons that despite all the modern day equipment, there are so many variables it is impossible to predict the weather with any semblance of accuracy further in advance than approximately 3 to 4 days. I will not entertain the Doomsday brigade re our weather, they are about as accurate as the people, I remember as a child, walking the streets encased in bill boards stating the end of the world is nigh. I'm an OAP and I was about 10 years old when I first remember the doom merchants, a good 50 years on isn't exactly "nigh"!

Well, my Clianthus are forming flower buds, and Canarina canariensis has started to emerge.
