Any thoughts on the situation in Calais.
Apparently the mayor is threatening to shut the port if Britain doesn't help sort out the situation.
I can see their point, up to a point.
But why do they let them enter France in the first place?

Its about time this country made life more difficult for those that stow away on trucks in order to enter the UK.
They know that once they are here, only a small percentage get thrown out, and even then there is a tide of public condemnation.
We are too gullible, or should I say, those running the country are.

The governments approach of fining the drivers is ridiculous.

I saw the video on the bbc of immigrants jumping into the back of the trucks!
Why the hell aren't the trucks locked?
Let them shut the port, I can't believe also that they want money off the UK to help with the problem.
I think that they let them enter because they don't won't to stop in France anyway

Most are locked with cords but some times they're cut to get in, these guys will do any thing to get here even riding on the axles, they are sometimes even in the load before it is loaded on to the lorry and the driver will not know any one is in there, last time i came back you don't leave your lorry and you have to have eyes in your back of your head and just before i get any near the ship i stop and check to see if any one has got on, i can't afford £2000 fine, but if some is to ride home with you it's better if he/she is inside the lorry than riding on the axle as some people have been kill

I do have sympathy for these folk fleeing the atrocities of their countries it must be terrifying but my main concern is if they are 'slipping through the net' who else is?

Much as I feel for anyone who is in a situation where they feel they have to flee their homeland, Britain isn't exactly huge, nor can we afford to be housing/feeding/caring for a seemingly ever increasing number of immigrants.

In short, we need to shut the doors....

Then they will seek an alternative port to come here by.
We have an Army back home now. How about we send them to Calais to check every vehicle destined for Britain? The truckers will moan of course but it will start to put these II's off soon enough,

Do I understand correctly, that france wants Britain to pay for france's problem that france is failing to solve?

It is my understanding that EU immigration laws have it that political refugees must seek refuge in the first member state they reach. Unless I am very much mistaken, Calais is in france, which is a member state of the EU. Therefore any illegal immigrants in Calais are france's problem.

Perhaps Britain should be demanding compensation from france for failing to solve their problem, and in failing to meet their obligations are costing us money.
