Language is a living thing which evolves and English, being a global language,
is evolving quickly. How many words do you now use which either didn't exist or had a different meaning when you were at school? Punctuation and other conventions have changed their format too. The important thing is that we are able to communicate our meanings effectively.

Far from it. I have every sympathy for them.

Surely anecdotal evidence is when A tells B, who then tells C, who then tells me? Is my day to day experience not solid? If you want to rely on data then we can both take the same figures and use them to prove our two separate opinions.
Here's one we hear every day. We stand in the queue at the till and when it's our turn they say "can I help you?"!!!!!!
Or "it was like literally so funny". What!!

Its perfectly solid within the small subset of the bigger picture that you personally see. What you, or I, or any other one individual sees is not necessarily representative of the whole.

Well, maybe my view is tainted by my experience of my daughters education. But if better is achieved elsewhere then surely we should aim for that too?

We've stopped saying Cool and Groovy. I used to use those like literally every sentence. So I expect that they will too ... plus the language & OED adapts and moves on too

    Me too. But I can't ...

I remember when as a young 'un and I was breaking various bones my old man used to say that "if you don't take more care this will all bite you on the ass when you're older". I would think to myself "what does the silly old fart know?". Now that I'm older it turns out he was right!

Pete's link shows that although jumbled letters can still be read (if the first and last letter of each word remains the same) it creates, in varying degrees, difficulties in reading, attention span and comprehension. None of that takes into account incorrect grammar that can easily change the meaning.

Language is a constantly changing thing but correct spelling and grammar make the understanding of what is being said more comprehensible and, therefore, the communication much more effective.

      Innit :blue thumb: :heehee:
