If he is running free in fields he will probably squat but when they can smell where another dog has peed they will usually pee over it. My Cocker Spaniel must have been at least 2 years old before he suddenly cocked his leg, my little Bichon was doing it at only a few months old!!! he looked so cute with his little leg up!!

It's not all about temperament. Having them neutered is also a prevention against testicular cancer. But I agree he is too young and would wait till 18 months at least for a large breed dog unless there is a medical reason for it.

My chocolate labrador remained 'entire' also my spaniel, my Bichon was only done because his testicles didn't drop as they should, I personally think it is very wrong to acquire a male dog and then have his 'bits' chopped off to prevent something he may never get anyway, incidentally I have never actually known anyone whose dog developed testicular cancer!!!

I wasn't advocating for neutering, merely citing reasons other than temperament that dogs are 'done'. There are several reasons why dogs are neutered, including preventing accidental matings which I'm sure none of your dogs were ever party to either. But it does happen.
