I have had this for more years than I care to count and it is gradually becoming more and more miserable. It is a progressive thing so I know it won't just go away but is a good sleep once in a while just too much to ask?
I know it is actually quite a common ailment so I'm just wondering what all you good folk that also get it do to relieve the symptoms? I am currently taking magnesium and drinking tonic water with little noticeable change.

Mrs L suffers from this (or rather I suffer and she wakes up tired) and combines it with nightmares which also seem to ramp the activity up. She tried amitriptyline on doc's advice and ramped up the dosage gradually. Personally I think it didn't achieve a thing.
Running is supposed to help via tiring of the legs (don't believe this either!) but as it's triggered by the noggin, I would suggest looking to any causes of stress or anxiety. Are you a natural worrier?
Might want to look at meditation or similar. Haven't had a chance to ask a chinese herbalist yet but you never know.

I used to get this, thankfully I don't anymore so it can go away, I used to stretch my legs as hard as I could and hold it for as long as I could then repeat it several times, I found that this helped.

Ask your Dr for quinine tablets, it`s in tonic water but you may need a larger dose, I keep a bottle of tonic water by the bed and guzzle it through the night, I seldom get the bad problems I used to.

I get this when I'm over tired and find going to sleep on my front makes a difference. Eating a banana is supposed to relieve it too but I wouldn't know, I can't eat them.

I'm not sure if I've had this or not, but for a while I found while sitting I just wanted to keep moving my legs?

I seem to have got rid of it by stretching the leg muscles from time to time, just putting my legs out straight and tensing up all the muscles in each leg in turn.

I put it down to standing all day for 10 hours or so, often only moving around in a small area.

I get the same thing but it stops when I go to bed. Stretching does help as it does with Plantar Fasciitis. Fortunately mine isn't very frequent but if it is, I can understand how it can get you down.

I suffer from it periodically when my iron levels are a bit low.. It is not pleasant I agree.. I usually go through a series of stretching exercises, circular movements of hands and feet 10 times one way and 10 times in reverse. These stretching exercises, circular movements Take several Repeat times before I feel any difference..
I don't drink tea or coffee after 8pm.
I always walk every day.. There are some interesting tips here I have tried some of them quite successfully.

One or two I haven't tried there. Thank you @Marley Farley
I have booked a doctors appointment for a couple of weeks in the future. It is bad enough for that now so no point in my being silly about it any more.

Sounds good to me @Lea.. Get them to check your iron level as that can affect your Melatonin level which in turn can contribute highly to RLS..

Wife and I both get it sometimes. We both find that stretching exercises help, but I'm convinced its not just the stretching, I think its something to do with circulation, because more vigorous but light exercise (ie exercise that uses the full range of movement) is more effective than say walking or squats and such.

Tiredness is a massive contributing factor too, especially if mind and body are our of sync. I.e. if your mind is alert but your body is fatigued, or vice versa, then you get that awful situation where you have energy to burn but can't, either because your mind wants to do stuff but your muscles are too tired, or your muscles are full of energy by your mind wants to sleep.

Another thing that makes a massive difference for me at least is temperature. I like my legs to be ever so slightly on the chilly side. If I'm warm and tired, my legs go crazy.
