When visiting a friend in Grimsby I made the mistake of asking for Cod and chips,if you'd have seen the look on their faces you'd have thought I'd committed the biggest crime:yikes:...my friend made allowances for me:huh: and told the server I was a 'yorkie' .."Ahhhh that explains it then" was the reply!...we had a laugh about it but you could still see they weren't over pleased:rolleyespink: I ended up with Haddock just to pacify them...what a carry on:rolleyespink:

Me neither. I read the Oz link also. Plus it passes Canadian safety checks. I hate unsubstantiated tat like that.

We are really fortunate here as we have a fishmonger who buys lots of locally caught fish from Redcar, Staithes and Whitby and is always offering some lesser known species as well as the popular ones.

(Mods - am I allowed to put a link to the shop's website?)

I go for the lesser known local fish too, Triggers, Gurnard, occasional Mullet.

I even made @Jenny namaste go into our local wet fish shop, she didn't like it :snork:

Yep, love to have a look at that @alex-adam :)

Whelks, my favourite, when I go into Swansea market they have lovely fresh fish, I treat my self to half a pound, 200g nearly as expensive as monkfish now.

Coley was very widely available when I lived in Eire, loved the smoked.

I use Coley quite a lot to bulk out my fish pies, With smoked Haddock and anything else thats on offer...Morrisons is the best place for fresh fish I personally find,
Tho a bit of a trek from where I live, I also use Smoked salmon trimmings as we are aiming for flavour here. A nice creamy white sauce with parsley / Lovage, completes a really tasty mix, U can also use cream cheese in the sauce, Oh I can fatten any one up :) I usually make quite a batch and freeze enough for at least 3 pies that way no effort to put a tasty meal on the table. Did the farmers market at 7am this morning a sack of my most loved taters Wilja £5, plus local honey for hot toddies .5 different sorts of local apples, I do so love Autumn am still picking runner beans they still have flowers on them, It is so good to live in England....:spinning: Oh smoked Garlic is good as well

Together with Carp (tasty), Pouting, and all sorts other interesting stuff that I look out for when it's cheap as it costs me about £100 in fuel, pub B&B & bait for 2 days sea fishing. I find the smell of Whiting slime rather off putting so scrape it off with a filleting knife and fry them (smaller ones whole, larger one filleted) or oven bake and make fish cakes & fish pies, also using Pouting & Pollock for the cakes & pies.

I'm fairly sure that Morrisons has the biggest variety of fish, maybe not all at the same time, but as mentioned above all sorts of species turn up there and often shoppers aren't willing to try something new so there's often some real bargains to be had and a relatively inexpensive opportunity to be a bit adventurous.

                              Yooo hoo,
just back from French France and watched the ladies preparing these anchovies in Collioure. on the border with Spain. I quite liked them white, in brine and vinegar but not smoked,
