:th scifD36: Sorry to hear that Moyra.
Have to say I haven't ever had any "tricks" at Halloween.
As others have said, the numbers are decreasing each year. Mind you, now I've moved I haven't any yard stick to go by. So, I shall wait and see ...

I just get enough candy for the little monsters. Pour myself a martini and sit on the stoop waiting for them.

\I usually leave a light on when out in the evening, so last year came back to eggs running down the front door.
Its a stupid idea full stop.

I guess it has a meaning in the US, but over here its just stupid, and not really a friendly exercise.

If anyone really doesn't want their door knocked by Trick or Treater's you can download and print off a poster for that purpose. Here's a couple (or check out your area Police website):
                Hampshire Police
Wiltshire Police click on the PDF near the bottom of the page - also useful information e.g.

I don't mind Halloween per se, but I do mind them knocking on my door. I'd rather see a leaflet which says 'Trick or Treat here' so that they know to leave those who don't have a sign in peace.

It is very strong in our village as it is mostly full of young families so they all like to dress up their kids in all the stuff they get from the supermarkets and go round the whole village in large groups:yikes:When we first moved here I used to give them money as there wasn't that many of them, but gradually as the new village grew and we now have nearly a thousand households,I changed to getting lots of sweeties which was still a tad expensive.:wow:

Anyway, last year and the year before we never had that many knocks on the door which I couldn't understand, but then found out later that all the mums had decided amongst themselves at the school gates that unless a house was dressed with pumpkins, spiders webs, skeletons etc, they would leave those residents alone:yay:

What used to annoy me was that on our village forum before it closed down villagers on there used to boast that with the amount of sweets that their kids collected on that one night they didn't have to buy their kids any sweets for months as their buckets had been overflowing.:yikes:That did miff me a bit as we don't have kids so will never ever benefit from the night plus the parents all earn such fantastic salaries that they can afford to live in large house and drive round in very large Chelsea taxis and fairly newish sports cars (Lotus Evoras)

So this year we shall sit and watch the telly or go for our usual village walk and let them all get on with it:snork:

We've been getting an increasing amount of trick or treater's each year and most are like 3 to 9 years old and accompanied by adults. We enjoy seeing them enjoying the occasion to be fair and they are always polite as are their parents.

Myself I like the occasion of Halloween, I think because it relates to autumn, my favourite time of year. I do think it is becoming a little too commercial in some shops though, especially for one night, you always see so much reduced stuff the day after :)

I have seen these in the shops for £9.99 , if I see them at £5 I will get one :)
One year I bought loads of sweets and not many turned up, so I saved them and took them into work for my birthday :blue thumb:. We always take sweets in on birthdays.

                    Or even better ....

I'd like to know what is considered an acceptable "trick", we all know they are actually after a "treat",
But apart from doing some kind of pointless vandalism, what should be the "trick" side of it?

                          nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnope.

but should it be a oneway street?
as the title suggests, trick or treat.

The treat bit is easy, but what should be the trick?

That's where everyone has the wrong idea nowadays. The 'trick' part of is totally misunderstood. The original saying was 'guising' or 'souling' and the person calling at the door would be expected to say a prayer (for a departed member of the household), sing or dance etc. For some reason, about a century ago, that morphed into what is now known as 'trick or treat'.

So it isn't supposed to be 'trick or treat' but the receiver of the 'treat' should be given a performance or 'trick' (not to be mistaken with a lady of the night :heehee:).

Tricks (in the form of 'egging' or other similar things), as they are now commonly know, can be construed as a criminal offence.
