Good for you Maria. :) I usually work in the greenhouse in wet weather but that's pretty much empty this time of year. It's not the rain that bothers be so much but the constant wind this time of year and that I won't work in, it drives me mad!

                Rain = a garden's thirst quencher ;)
The most basic rule of gardening has to be: all seasons bring their benefits to the garden and should be given due respect for it (even though we may not feel quite as accommodating :heehee: ). Now, if you have water butts, that rain will mean re-fresh-ment :hapfeet: after being emptied through the not-so-rainy-weather :heehee:

As for "prioritising", it's my interpretation that @Sheal was trying to give you a friendly heads up that if you have the room, and passion for gardening, a greenhouse *is* a priority :heehee: Remember what I suggested to you in another post? You need to get the backbone of your garden organised well before you put the plants in ;) The backbone includes sheds/greenhouse/hard landscaping/patios/paths etc. Plants come later. If you put plants first you will, inevitably, incur losses and extra expense in the longer term.

No one could fault your enthusiasm, maria. And it is heartwarming to experience :blue thumb:
But, I'm going to ask you to take a few deep breaths, slow down just a tad and really give some thought to: your garden (aspect, soil, prevailing winds); then I'm going to ask you to give time and thought to the "type" of garden you are aiming to achieve in 5 years time (maybe 10 years time! - it's all too easy to get carried away on a whim and a desire to have a garden NOW!) :heehee:

And then, I would like you to think about just what do you want your garden to do for you! Should it reward you with edibles? Flowers? Scent? Evergreens? Cottage style? Jungle style?
How much time can you give to your garden? One hour a day? One hour per week? More?
Who does the garden have to cater for? Just you? Children? Pets? Parties? Solitude?
Do you need it to dry your laundry in good weather? What provision have you made for storing garden related equipment?

All these things are achievable ONCE you know what you have to work with, what you want to work and, realistically, how much time you have to work with!

I know you are still very much in the planning stage (as am I) but please do consider all aspects of gardening ... not just the rainy bits :heehee: Gardening means respecting the seasons and acting/reacting accordingly

Besides: this is one very mild October!!! UN-seasonably mild :roflol:

@"M" I don't know anyone on the island that has a water butt, not the biggest of sales here. :heehee:

That's all good info you've given Maria but not all gardeners plan, that includes me. :) All my gardens past and present have evolved with a spur of the moment decision whilst I'm out there doing something else. Of course that may be the person I am, one that dislikes routine. :)

At my last house, I treated all my gardening "exploits" as ... well: experiments (hey, it wasn't my forever home, so I wouldn't be living with any mistakes!)

But, since joining here, I have learned that gardening can be costly - in time and loss of plants.

So, moving to this forever home, I made a conscience decision to make a plan before I dived in and made (as far as is able!) costly mistakes: hence my thoughts on making a plan. I think I read somewhere on here that maria is at a stage where she wishes to get the hard stuff done in prep for later years? (Maybe I imagined it :heehee: ) :noidea:

The reference to water butts is, in part, tongue in cheek (Mr "M" still hasn't plumbed ours in :gaah: ) but, mainly for maria to see that, even the rain, isn't all doom and gloom and can be a gardeners best friend (at certain times, anyway ;) ) and to go with the flow (no pun intended: this occasion).

Was just trying to offer friendly advice based on my experiences. But, I have noticed recently that a number of my posts are not being taken in the vein intended so I think I need to take some time to reflect on that (really beginning to think I'm speaking double Dutch with a twist of gobbledegook :heehee:).

                    :mute:

                    Love and luck Sheal xMx

I appreciate everyones time spent replying to my posts .But as @Sheal says sometimes its nice to just do something sometimes that makes you happy (as long as its nothing too expensive:) ) anyway thanks again everyone x

You're quite right "M" with the advice you've given Maria, particularly as she has told us she is a novice. I think when anyone is starting out in gardening a plan is a good idea, but remember those plans can be and are on many occasions broken. It is sometimes better to go with what feels right. I've said I don't like planning, I go with what feels right at the time, not only with gardening but in all aspects of my life so I suppose I'm different to most.... nuts probably! :heehee:

We all have different ways of putting things across and there was nothing wrong with your friendly advice. :) However, the fact we are not talking to people face to face, with no facial expressions to go on, sometimes things get misconstrued. I think I'd better shut up now before I start digging myself a hole here!

Tell Mr. "M" from me to get his finger out and get that butt plumbed in! :heehee:

Maria......you can ask as many questions as you like, that's what GC is all about! We all had to start somewhere and none of us stop learning, gardening is an endless subject. :)
