I've finally got round to attempting grafting. Next door has a great cooking apple tree which for the last two years they have very cruelly pollarded - they just don't want it (no I have no idea why they don't just get rid completely either). The shoots thrown up this year have been great so I snipped one off and have attempted a graft onto a branch of my Braeburn apple.

No idea if it will take as it's a damned fiddly job. I'm also thinking of trying again but with 'budding' rather than a graft, to both try it out and see how it works. Theory is fine but practice is better!

Plenty of guidance videos on the Net so I'm sure (being a :love30: GC gardener) it'll work out fine..

I'm just hoping it doesn't fall off before it takes! I'll be very surprised if it works frankly...

I always intended to try that ... bought an expensive grafting knife only to discover that it was a left handed one :wallbanging:
If yours works, I might just give it a go with a Japanese maple ......

They have special knives?! Ooh, Christmas pressie...

I used a rusty garden knife although I did sharpen it first and fully expected to slice open a thumb.

I was told to graft when the tree's dormant, but shortly before bud burst, so in about 4 months time, but checking online it appears bud grafting (too fiddly for me) may be different.

Back in the 80s I got the grafting bug.
Still got a few apple trees I budded back then.

I think in general you bud in late summer and graft in early spring.

Must admit, I always found budding the easier of the two.

I avoid grafting if I can. The best trick is to say that you just have to go and get some tool or other, then just hide for as long as possible and let others get on with it:heehee:

Sorry, couldn't resist. You set that one up and nobody else took it so I did.

Being serious though, sounds good. I hope its successful for you. Its something I intend to try one day. I've got a load of young crab apple trees, and a couple of eating apple trees. The young crab apple trees are still a bit too young yet, but when they gain some strength I'm going to attempt a bit of grafting myself.

Are you gonna slit the bark and put a Miseltoe seed under it too? :)
