Does anyone have a link to a site with such a thing?

I would like to see which varieties grow well here or in the surrounding area before I go ahead and find, then make a purchase.

    many thanks.

Thanks spruce, I already have that list but as I know its quite incomplete I was hoping for a national database. I know or have heard of at lest 4 varieties, not on that cumbrian list. It is however very good.

I did the same as you & researched the best varieties for this area from a nearby specialist..
This is where I get mine from as it is specialist to Gloucestershire..
http://www.lodgefarmtrees.co.uk Don't know if he would know who the specialist is in your area..

Not sure if these people could help you...

It might be a long shot, but what about emailing the people that look after the lost gardens of Heligan? I know they have a 'research orchard', where they test what they've learned in theory. From the info they post about there, they have put a lot of research into the subject, as their motives don't appear to be to become commercial apple growers, you never know, they might share a some of their knowledge and references.
