Anyone got experience with these? It's for my aged Father-in-Law, he has sight problems and would struggle to operate an MP3 player or anything with small buttons or complicated.

I had hoped that my local library would have audio cassettes but I'm way out of date.

@JWK I don't know if its in Essex that you've been looking but I just clicked on my library link and it pulled up 258 cassette books in the county's libraries. I guess it should be similar in other counties. :blue thumb:

Thanks Shiney, it's in Surrey that I'll need to be able to borrow them.

It's good to know they have some cassettes in other counties, I'll give my local library a ring tomorrow (all I've do so far is look online)

        RNIB John
They issue/lend/sell special machines, a bit like the early transistor radios, large buttons etc
        Along with many cassette tapes

I used to read onto the tapes, at one time, (books requested that they did not have)

Thanks Eve, I've looked on the RNIB site and that's a possibility - I need to understand what their Daisy CD format means, it seems you need a special player and they look very expensive. Again I'll ring and see if they will loan out the equipment as atrial.

That Calibre link is a good find. F-in-Law has a combined tape and CD player so I'm hopeful.

Thanks all for your advice. Today I rang my local library and they were extremely helpful. They stock Talking Books mostly as CDs and a few as cassettes. So I've registered my Father-in-law and because of his age/bad sight he'll be able to borrow them for free. He's got no idea what to listen to though, I'll have to select a few popular books to give him a taster.

This is like going back 20 years or so, we had children's stories on cassette tapes and play them to our kids on long car journeys. They loved the Gumdrop stories narrated by Richard Briers.

That's great news John. Might be worth contacting one of the other providers as well though in case he gets through all the library stock too quickly!

I do hope that he does get stuck in to books. All the other ideas his doctor and care workers have come up with don't spark any interest so far.
