We used to put the spoon over a gas ring.
Touch your ear with the spoon afterwards and it made you jump.

I think I can live without olive oil, not sure if Popeye can though.

My step mother had a similar approach to home remedies. Make the medicine more terrifying than the ailment it was to treat, and suddenly you felt better.

Olive oil, Its the smell ugh and yes earoles was what it was used for, along with oil of cloves for toothache, Plus Bicarbonate for indigestion.
Oh we lived it up in the past ! I do heartily recommend Rape oil makes a very tasty salad dressing but needs diluting as tis a bit heavy I mix it with grape seed or sunflower

Nothing to do with the price of olive oil, but when I was a kid I had a boil on my neck, the doc prescribed a Kaolin poultice.
Remember the tin being hotted up every evening ready to have the stuff slapped on my neck.

Was probably only for a few days, cant remember, but it seemed ages being a kid at the time.

Felt the same Pete about those days feeling like forever. Fullers earth or Bread poultice if chemist shut round here for drawing infections and splinters.

                That they did Pete!
Says a lot really! It seems to me today we take a drug for a simple complaint, then a drug to counteract the side effects of the first drug and so on ..............
Maybe some of the simple things may be worth revisiting?

I still make the occassional bread poultice for minor nasties, like if you get a splinter and it goes bad. They work brilliantly. Its because they actively suck the filth out of the wound as the bread dries.

We both love olive oil as a dressing, but there's olive oil and there's olive oil, and there's a vast difference between taste of the good quality stuff and the cheaper stuff. We're fortunate enough to visit Greece twice a year and know a couple there who grow olives organically and also press their own crop and are kind enough to give us a litre and half (plastic ex-coke bottle) of extra virgin oil to take home every time we visit.

As far as old remedies go I remember kaolin and morphene for upset tums and kaolin poultices for boils though Mrs W had the heated bottle treatment applied for a boil - empty lemonade bottle heated then applied and as the air inside contracted it sucked out the poison. I also recollect a bottle of Fennings Fever Cure (horrible taste) that was kept in the pantry and when some of it got spilt on a metal cake tin it ate away at the metal!

Fennings fever powder, forgotten those. There were the Fennings little lung healers too.
Then the nice tasting multi coloured highly attractive to children junior aspirin! We used to feign headaches to get one lol!
Comfrey leaves on sprains. Dock leaves on stings.
Vick on chests in winter or goose grease as my poor friend suffered.
Agree about the olive oil, think unless you have a good supply route best we can do is get the cold pressed extra virgin that has an identifiable single country of origin.

Wandering a bit more off topic.:)
I used to love the taste of the yellow linctus the doc gave you for most things.
Not keen on the red linctus though, that was a bit bitter.
