Odd one this. Today I signed for a parcel supposedly for our neighbours. We do this often as they both work. We don't mind, they are good neighbours. However there is a problem this time. As I was feeling rather ill I did not check the name of the recipient. The parcel is not for them, but rather for the son of the previous neighbours who moved away about 10 years ago. So the question is how do we proceed from here? There is a tracking number on the parcel. Can we use that to find out who sent it and return it or what? Any advice would be most welcome.

Wasn't the Post office who delivered it. It was DPD I think.

Telephone DPD and ask them then? This must be something that has happened before.

Return to Sender and take it to your local post office to return it

Certainly not going to spend money returning it. The old neighbours were not friendly at all. Post office is 20 mile round trip and we have no idea who has sent it. No return address on it.

If the sender of the parcel starts wondering why it never arrived he/she will probably contact the courier, so if I was you I would telephone DPD , tell them what has happened and put the ball in their court.

Then treat it as "Unsolicited Mail" and do as you will with it!

Sod them then, just hold on to it and wait. If they want it it's up to them to find out what's happened to it. They've had 10 years to tell folk they've moved, if they've not told them in that time, they don't want to keep in contact anyway.

If its tracked then the courier will know where they delivered it, and a copy of your signature,
its not your fault and its not the couriers fault, it the senders, they didn't check for current adress.
But under the circumstances I'd just make the one phone call to the couriers to explain, if they are not interested, and they should be, then I'd hang on to it for a period of a few weeks befoire dumping it or opening it.

Agree, one phone call to explain and then you are exonerated.

We are going to give the parcel to next doors, since it is addressed to their house, if not to them and they can worry about what to do with it.

I decided a few months ago not to accept parcels for neighbours we live on the end of a terrace so the 1st one the Couriers make for ,nearest.... The single bloke next door orders loadsa things from the Internet and we were constantly being disturbed with aggressive door banging from various Couriers, Now he knows he is not going to be there to take them in . Does he politely ask me? No he does not and I barely get a thank you. So I don't do it anymore, apart from being made responsible I do not need other peoples parcels in my tiny porch . So dropped a polite note in his door asking he make alternative arrangements, Never heard another thing....

Problem solved. This afternoon there was a knock on the door and a new dweller from about a mile down the lane asked if we had taken in a parcel. The Delivery company had told him that his parcel had been delivered. The name on the parcel was not his and the address was wrong. BUT he had proof that it belonged to him. Apparently our old neighbour had had dealings with the vendor and they took it upon themselves to send this poor chaps goods to the old customer. Pity they did not send the bill there as well.
