Today I'm thinking of all those brave men, women and animals who have given their lives for our country [IMG]

@Zigs was that referring just to Sunday or also to today? Today is Armistice day and the silence is normally held at 11 a.m. today.

Yvonne, sorry, but I missed your post

When selling to the public the VAT rules say that VAT must be included in the price and not added on afterwards. So you may not see anything on the invoice.

If the organisation that is receiving the money is a charity it doesn't matter if it's a purchase as long as they include an additional 10% (that's why organisations such as the National Trust now ask, when you go in, whether you wish it to be Gift Aid. If you say "yes" they add 10%). It's an illogical solution to the negotiations that the Revenue had with the charities a couple of years ago.

I like your comment about 'our lovely thoughtful government' :blue thumb: :th scifD36: :heehee:

When I first heard that the Chancellor had said he was going to waive the VAT I thought that it was just rumour. He can't actually do it as there's no facility within the tax law to do so. I now read that he's going to pay £1.1m from the Libor fund to cover it. I don't really approve of the fund being used that way but he can do what he likes with it. What puzzles me is that the VAT component of the sale figure is £3.7m from which can be deducted any VAT on the materials etc. This still doesn't come down to the stated £1.1m VAT. so I'm thinking there's a bit of a political con.

I don't have time to research things and it doesn't matter a lot anyway. I agree with John that nothing would have been done if the artist hadn't come up with the idea and someone wasn't prepared to take a risk with the idea. So the charities are quite happy with the end result.

@**Yvonne** - you might want to think carefully about placing your ceramic poppy outdoors, or if you do place it outdoors consider bringing it in for the winter as I would think there may be a risk of the ceramic cracking with extremes of temperature (particularly cold)

I have thought of that, I'm thinking perhaps putting it in a box frame, this type of thing

That's a nice idea: could you use a photo as a background and have the poppy mounted in front of it?

I was thinking of a completely black box and background, simple, fitting and will make a sharp contrast to the red?

My scrapbook brain was in gear with the earlier post: could just imagine a black and white photo of the Irish regiment with the contrasting red poppy in the foreground. But yes, completely black with just the poppy: top job! :)

Saw a bloke today stop and put the wreaths back up that had blown over in the wind, then stood in front of the memorial and saluted.
