We've steadily been pruning plants back. Because I won't go high up ladders I've had to wait for my husband to do the wisteria, which he did on Friday.

We've had a heavy frost overnight, the first really of the season. We're a bit worried now about the freshly-trimmed wisteria, as we had to cut it back quite a bit as the weight was pulling the tie screws out the wall. Will cutting back on Friday be enough for it not getting affected by last night's frost? My husband is really worrying now.

My other query is, is it now too late to trim back other plants, mainly bushes, many of which are still in flower but I don't think for much longer if the temperatures remain like they are at the moment. I don't want the cold to get into any & kill them as they're all well-established.

    Thank you :)

I know they say you shouldn't prune when frost is likely.
Personally its never bothered me when it comes to hardy trees and shrubs.

I've got a Russian vine that needs cutting back. I'm tempted to leave it until spring as it's quite exposed.

Don't worry about the wisteria, Ellen. Generally speaking, deciduous shrubs and climbers withstand cold better than evergreens. The reason for not pruning just before the frosts is that pruning might stimulate new, tender growth which is then hammered during the winter. +1 for the Russian Vine.....there's not much you can do to that to finish it off!

Sadly...! It's not my favourite plant of all time! I'll give that a cut back then as it looks awful right now!

Worth knowing with the deciduous/evergreen plants, I didn't know that :)
