I have 3 Jacks, Rocky, Jaspers Mum had her tail docked by banding at birth as she came from a working farm where they are farm dogs and use Jacks for rabbits and rats mainly now...

We didn't dock any of Rocky's pups hence Jaspers very expressive little tail and Maisie is a rescue and not docked.. For working dogs I agree with tail docking as I too have seen some nasty injuries to working dogs with..

I do not agree with a lot the KC rules, too much about looks..!
I did know an Irish wolf hound who had a full length tail and in the end she had to have the bottom 12"s removed due to constant infections as she would let it drag on the ground sometimes.. It was long and must have been quite a weight for her to constantly hold up.. After it was done she was a different dog, much more playful, so in those sorts of cases for health I agree with docking.. I don't for looks though..
Dogs tails are very expressive tools for them, they can't wave their arms about like us..!

Poppy has a shorter tail than she should have and I'm not sure whether she was docked or if there was some sort of accident. My Jack Russell dog has his tail intact and has never damaged it so far.
I have seen dogs docked for working and heard all the reasons why but I just couldn't do it for mine.

it has to be done at 3 days old and to be honest is like cutting your nail , but full anesthetic when older.

None of you ladies have mentioned "dew claws" that's the small nail (front legs) which would be our thumb , were my lot would have my mum moaning "another pair ruined" when she visited :lunapic 130165696578242 5: :doggieshmooze::doggieshmooze::doggieshmooze::doggieshmooze::doggieshmooze: and on most dog breeds these are removed and if not removed will grow in to the skin if left neglected as many are !!!

I have the dew claws done on mine.. I really do know what it is like if they get ripped.. I experienced it with my very first rescue dog nearly fifty years ago.. He was running in relatively long grass and somehow the grass got caught and he ripped 2!! Blood everywhere and straight to the vets.. He took a long time to heal as short of skin there after it happened.... So yes Spruce I have them done automatically when old enough..

they can be done at 3 -5 days old as well as pups !!! I have helped do that as well when my mums whippet had pups with a pair of curved scissors and some purple crystals which I have forgot the name off or that stick used for shaving cuts . But best to be removed when spaying etc at the same time I am surprised the vests dont ask at the time or point out to people
Marley it was probably the grass that cut thorough them , and yes the amount of blood I have used mud before now just to stop the bleeding as that's all I had at the time before I got home and went to the vets

Also when I worked on the farm in my teens and early 20's I used to remove the start of the horns just as the lump was starting to appear on the calf's head.

the more this thread goes on the more we are all finding out :hate-shocked:
