I had a complete combi system and radiators fitted last December
Oh it has been wonderful :-)

Last week the supplier/installer phoned and advised, the full annual service was due before 31st, can he come and do it for £90

    Ok when,
Well it was arranged for today, error one, it was at 07:30 and the system is in the Bedroom
so up early, to see outside white out with heavy frost (plumber can not be expected to work on a red hot system, so had it off all night) (Hmm had THE BOILER OFF all night)

07:25 KNOCK KNOCK plumber OK it will just take about an hour
10:00 Plumber pacing up and down front drive with mobile phone to ear
12:00 Err you have a problem mate, your system will not fire up since I disconnected/re-connected the Gas,
I have arranged for the manufacturer to call you, and arrange a repair ! BYE

    Not pleased :-(

17:00 Manufacturer "our man will be with you before SIX)
18:10 Man just left, with the system back up and running, replaced a control board
    Oh and presented the bill

Had a perfectly good system serviced, spent twelve hours on the coldest day of the
year with no heat and paid £90 for the privilege

    RUM TIME

I do remember your goings on with the heating last year Jack, what make of boiler did you get? If my old non-eco cast iron 25 year old boiler gives up I hope to replace it with one that will last the same length of time but I have heard that these modern ones are less reliable.

I would complain, weather cold etc, no heating so plumber can work, cold all day, electricity used for fires as no heating , lay it on really thick how inconvenienced you have been, had to cancel appointments etc, it might get you a reduction, nothing to lose by trying.

Mine is also apparently due a service, they telephoned to tell me so and wanted to book a day to come "sometime between 7am and 7pm" !!!! they want me to wait in all day. Explained I have dogs to walk, have to go out, made no difference, no concessions, it's only just over a year old it can't need servicing already surely??

Val they pull the old, if it is not serviced every twelve months, the warranty is void
They warranty is usually 5, 7, 10 years, which covers replacement boards
The boards are upwards of £500 each

John the best of the best is Worcester-Bosch, Then Baxi Neither of which will match up to your old cast iron one

Pam I do not have any electric fires Though I get your point, to be honest I could not do it as I
feel the young man who created the problem, would be burdened with it He was aged about 30 and looked almost in tears poor wee soul

Also I have been there myself, I was sent at midnight (as an engineer) to repair a night disco sound deck, it was reasonable when I arrived and totally silent within twenty minutes :-)
Ever been slow hand clapped by five hundred night drunkards at a disco :-(

Now how many times have I said that on here, along with reminders to buy rock salt, grit and snow shovels in summer before everyone is trying to empty the shops of them?

I've had combi boilers in this house and the last one, both Vaillant. My current one is eight years old and my previous one in the last house is still running twenty years on.

My brother fitted a Worcester-Bosch in his place and now says he would never have another one because of to many breakdowns and expensive replacement parts. It's due for changing in the next couple of years and he'll go for a Vaillant.

Boilers should be serviced once a year, it's not a con, but if it's not running properly it's likely to cost you more on your fuel bills.

Our previous boiler had been in for 26 years with no repairs but serviced every year. It was still working OK but we had to rip it out when we were refitting the utility room and kitchen. The installers (the people who had installed the previous one and had been servicing it all those years) said we haven't a hope of the new one lasting that long.

They come in every August and service it for £50. No problems. :blue thumb:

There's never any need to turn the boiler off the previous evening. The modern ones can be service even if they have been running right up to the time the engineer arrives.

It's now against the law for a manufacturer to insist that you have to have their engineer service the boiler in order to keep the warranty. All it requires is an engineer who is Gas Safe (replaced the Corgi registration in 2009) registered.

My combi is Worcester-Bosch, had 1 repair in 7 years, my service time is in Summer, we brought it forward a couple of months to get Summer, last time he came he had a probe gadget, he inserted it into the flue and ran heating, it told him if the emissions were okay and all the other info he needed, wasn`t here above 10 mins.

We still haven't turned our heating on yet and are keeping ourselves warm by burning cut up pallets and whatever wood we've scavenged and chain-sawed up for nothing.

The only room with heating on is where I do my homebrew, but once the fermentation gets off to a flying start, it's turned down.

Will have to put it on when our daughter comes back from Uni at Xmas as she's been used to overheated accommodation since September, although she's been preparing herself for return by having her windows open 24/7 (safe location/opening width/height above ground).
