I am interested in this as a potential for the greenhouse - depending on how long a litre would last of course, it could well be cheaper than the electric heating I use currently.

Do you fill the tin to the top with vermiculite, or is there an air gap?

Leave that one with me as i've got to make some more experimental burners.

This one lasted half an hour with about 16 holes so i'm gonna make a range of them with fewer holes to get the ideal burn.

Also different heights to save on re filling.

Packed to the top with vermiculite.

Looked at several different you tube vids before coming to my own conclusions :)

PS, i'm too much of a tight wad to go buy the cans for the experiment so it'll have to depend on can bank raids :snork:

Interesting project - plus you get some heat during the winter, which is what we all wanted you to have.

My brain is ticking away trying to think of a fuel feed that would keep it going overnight without overloading it; you don't happen to know any nurses by any chance? I am thinking a modified drip type idea (have a suitably safe container full of fuel, flexible fuel line drip feeding into the bottom of the burner vessel, flow rate controlled by pipe compression as it is on a drip.

I'd lay a fiver that the tubing used for a drip would be perfectly stable for ethanol too.

        EDIT - Something like this

Wouldn't sleep comfortably with a drip fed setup [IMG]

Fair point, although if set up right (fuel 'tank' kept well away from the burner (outside?) it should be safe enough. I suppose the alternative is to upscale your current idea in terms of the vermiculite and fuel holder whilst keeping the burner size similar?

Just tried to raid the can bank, nothing not squashed within reach.

Ethanol costs twice as much as parrafin and produces 35% less heat (so 170% more expensive plus more condensation?). C2H5OH + 3O2 -----> 2CO2 + 3H2O, I think it's only 2H20 when burning parrafin.

Parrafin nearly killed me though :hate-shocked:

Ever thought of making a rocket stove out of old cans? Can feed it with twigs & it's brilliant for boiling a billy (which you can make out of a can also) of water for a hot cuppa.
I've got a picture plan some where here..... Will find it for you.

A terracotta planter turned upside down on a couple of bricks with a few tealights under it throws off a bit of heat too.

I've got an old car wheel hub that I can use outside for cooking, but these are ok to use inside.

Made a smaller version that burns long enough to boil a kettle :)

Also got a brick with tea lights under it for low level heat :)
