Every morning I have an amble around the garden and check on the Seed Feeders, Fat Ball Feeders, the Nut Feeders and also the Bird Baths. I also put Sultanas on an old wooden Bird Table down at the bottom of the garden by the pond and they're gone by the afternoon. Just recently I've noticed a Black Bird waiting for me to put the Sultanas out while he sat a good 20 feet away. But over time he's been getting closer and closer while he waits for me to arrive until he's only about 5' away when I approach. Now he sits on the table while I put the Sultanas down. On the odd occasion when he's not there I give a whistle and within seconds he's flitted in from where ever he's been and gives me the "eye" until I put the Sultanas out. Cheeky, but nice!!:heehee:

Isn't it lovely when birds gain enough confidence to come closer, even if all he's after are your sultana's! :)

Well, to be honest I don't expect gratitude, Sheal, but it's nice to get the reward of trust from wild life and also know that by feeding them we're helping through conditions that we wouldn't survive in. I think I'm daft enough to think he recognises me as a "friend" rather than a threat.:heehee:

As nutty as it may sound I do think he'll see you as his friend:blue thumb: I once had an old pal..Cyril the squirrel .I always recognised him from the numerous squirrels by the chunk out of his tail, he was a cheeky little chap and would come and sit on my knee and I even caught him in the kitchen on the work top nibbling at a digestive biscuit ..not that I encouraged him mind:whistle:

I have a female and a male who wait at the front door each morning and I have to go and unlock the door and reach up into the dustbin cupboard for their pot of muesli, suet and raisins. They are literally 6" from my hand as I place a pile under the camellia by the door. It grows low enough to deter the wood pigeons from getting under there . I'll take a piccie when there is enough daylight,

Blackbirds are very cheeky. When I was digging some long trenches over the lawn for power cables , as soon as I stopped for a well earned brew the Blackbirds where there for the pickings . But one would even follow 3 feet behind me while I was digging thus getting the best pick !

When i was on the farms working I use to do some milling every week .first I would grind the corn for chicken feed and mix it with cod liver oil,(about 1/2 ton) then I would have to roll the oats for the cattle feed and you could time a blackbird as to how fast he came ,we had a tin bin about 5ft square and he would sit an the tin and pick the corn that would bounce up of the floor. As long as I moved slowly he never moved, he was sat at the side of me while I finished then of he would go till the next week.

How wonderful! Your post has reminded me of when I used to have a blackbird who would come to call for a few tasty sultanas.

Eventually, we reached this stage (mind you, that was two houses and 11 years ago) ....

                    DSCN0007(4) (480x640).jpg

... and it definitely wasn't an easy trick to feed him in one hand and take the photo with the other! :heehee:

Hope you manage to achieve something similar because it really is quite an experience to reach that point where a wild bird will eat from your hand.

Reminds me of my little Robin who came to see me when I was fishing this last 2 years, not as close as your blackbird but he would come and help himself to my maggot's that where in my bait tray about 6ins from me,odd times he would pop down onto the rod end and just sit and look at me,very cheeky. The only problem with him he never sat long enough for me to catch him on camera:eeew: still might catch him next year if he pops round

I get the occasional bird that sits on the end of my rod or pole when I'm fishing.......which always leaves me mentally urging it to fly off as my float might go down while it's sitting there:dunno::hate-shocked::heehee:

Yes that is one big problem, but found out that if you get a good big bite the whip of the rod flying round moves them of.I call him names at times but still can't wait for him to pop round,he's only aloud to get so many maggots them I have to put a cloth over to stop him.

When we first moved into Shineyland there was a resident blackbird. The old lady used to feed it every day and it, of course, expected the same from us. She always left her kitchen door open so that he could come in when he wanted and he used to sit on the draining board to eat. Then he had a bath in a bowl in the sink.

We didn't leave the door open so he used to knock on the back door with his beak or on the window by the draining board. He was quite happy for Mrs Shiney to stroke his head whilst he was eating. :blue thumb:

I don't have any photos as it was a long time ago but Mrs Shiney gets on very well with birds and have plenty of photos with her holding or stroking wild birds.

The nearest I got to being friendly with one of our feathered friends was a robin who used to sit on the handle of my rotovator and mower whilst I worked. I could understand the rotovator as he used to hop off and grab worms as they were turned up but never understood why he bothered with the mower.
