    Thanks shiney :)

Yes we are about an hours drive over from the Bay Of Islands just north of KeriKeri. A 15 minute drive from Whangaroa harbour.

We are originally from further down the North Island just south of Hamilton city but I have siblings who live up the far north & it's one of the last frontiers in my eyes. So rugged yet so beautiful. And a person can still afford to cut their life out of the land.

It is TRUELY my paradise :)

A lovely part of the area :blue thumb: You've picked a really good place. :)

I suppose that when you were at Hamilton you got fed up with all the tourist in the Rotorua area! :heehee:

Shiney, my partner Mike & I were both born & raised about 20 minutes south of Hamilton in a town called Te Awamutu. Where split enz came from :)

My dad was a prison officer at a prison just out of town called Waikeria. That's where I grew up in the village.

I've only been to Rotorua once lol. Nice place, strange smell & a deep cultural history. As most of NZ has.

I think where we are now up the far north gets more tourists. But it's such a beautiful place with so many beach type places & little settlements to visit.

We go for drives all over & some of these gravel country roads that some wouldn't dare go up hold many surprises of the good kind. Hidden bays & crafty little spots that look like something off a post card.

We were both raised in the country & the prices for land in our area just got ridiculous. We purchased a house & moved into town for work & school but it was unbearable for us. So I started looking online & found this place.

We only see the odd neighbour now & then out here. You wouldn't even know our place is where it is. You have to cross 2 rivers or fords/fiords (sorry for the spelling) to get here & it looks like a cattle race/road. People can never find us :)

But I've met some amazing tourists since we moved here. Germans, Britts, etc. I always go out of my way to chat with people & help them out if they look a bit lost.

If any of you ever come this way....., please let me know :)

Leonie, that's a very nice offer :grphg:

You're definitely right about the 'strange' smell of Rotorua. I don't think I could live with that smell of sulphur.

Is 90 Mile Beach popular with tourists now?

We spent five weeks driving around NZ, Christmas with friends in Nelson and then a week with friends in Titirangi (Auckland). They have one of the interesting old houses built on stilts (needed a lot of work done on it) and their garden was part of the rain forest. They'd only recently moved in and it was a very nice spot to live (especially for their very young kids) - apart from the mosquitos!

This was the view of their garden from the deck.

Shiney, yes 90 mile beach is still popular.

When heading down south we usually try & bypass Auckland as much as possible. The traffic at certain times is just crazy & us being country hicks, we can't handle traffic jams lol

It might be my app but your pic comes up broken so I'll try viewing on my laptop later :)

Depending on the weather we get lots of midgies out here. Usually when I'm in the garden in the afternoons I get bitten like crazy. I always forget insect repellent.

Oh cool. I hope you had a wonderful visit.
What was your fav part of your holiday?

We'd like to do the north & south islands in a house bus one day. Might have to wait a few years as we don't have a bus yet & life here with growing & animals means we can't go too far all together.

And after Mike & I being together for 24 years we are finally getting married next year in March. So it's all on. :)

                    Congratulations :yay:  :grphg:

It's always difficult to say what we think is the best place we visited as every place is different.
As we were there through Christmas and New Year the atmosphere was brilliant and everyone seemed to be in a holiday mood. Some of the places we visited are listed below.

We went to the touristy type sites as well as the out of the way places. Christmas Eve Carol concert in the street in Nelson was memorable (but a bit chilly) but Christmas Day we spent hiking in Abel Tasman Park in temperatures up to 80F.

New Year's Eve we spent on the beach at Queenstown watching the fireworks and celebrating with the locals.

Did all the usual visits around the Bay of Islands and went to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The Rotorua area has lots of touristy things to do :) so, apart from the thermal springs, rainbow springs and the Glowworm Caves we did the usual visits to a sheep shearing show, a Hangi (very good), went on a good Duck Tour and visited the Kiwi house.

We enjoyed the Matakohe Kauri museum, loved the Tongariro National Park as the weather was just right for us to wander up the mountain (may seem a bit easy to you but we were already pensioners when we were touring :old: :heehee:), went to the site of Tangiwai Rail disaster, hiked in the Waipoua Forest and enjoyed looking around Wellington including the Botanical Gardens (with the interesting sculptures) and the Te Papa museum.

South Island was pretty good and, once again, we did the touristy things:- Queenstown and the Shotover Canyon (only watched the bungee jumping :heehee:) and the trip on TSS Earnslaw, Christchurch (nicer botanical gardens than Wellington), walked on the Fox Glacier, went part way up Mount Cook
Definitely worth watching sunrise and sunset on the mountain :dbgrtmb:
                    304_0478.JPG

                    304_0467.JPG

Wanaka area was pretty and we took a trip on the Kingston Flyer and, of course, the Te Anau area with trips on Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound are not to be missed. Even just little places en route are well worth taking a slight detour - such as the Pancake Rocks at Punakaikai and the Mirror Lakes and just seeing the statue of the collie dog that commemorates the work done by the dogs without whose help the pioneers of the MacKenzie Country couldn't have survived.

I don't do any fancy things with photos. All I do is take thousands of them so that I can get few that look OK :heehee:

I'm working on threads about my travels and have been posting them here, if you find some time to look. :)
