I'm starting to wonder if it's the thread as well. I bought one of those cheapo packs of little cotton reels with all the colours of the rainbow and have had it snap even on normal cotton. Manual also suggests that this could be at fault too, or it could be a combination of the two.

Might try it with a more heavy duty thread before adjusting the tensions. Thanks everyone, will report back.

@Dips do you remember I spoke about my daughter-in-law's Christmas decorations? Well my son hasn't had time to take pictures but has given me the link to his wife's blog for you, to take a look at some of the things she has made. Some of the pages need to be scrolled. :)

Thanks "M" :) I think she is wasting her talent by not setting up a little business for herself as she's earning very little at her full time job.

She should, at least, consider the Craft Fair circuit until she becomes established. Mind you, working full time, indulging in her (recreational) hobby and turning that into a business venture can be a very tough balancing act: not impossible, but quite a toughie. Still, I agree with you - either craft fairs, craft websites or local businesses stocking her wears would be a grand start!

I think craft fairs can be very draining and fairly expensive to be honest. if she did decide to sell and wanted to go on etsy i can e-mail a link for her to get 40 free listings so wouldn't cost a penny until she sold something and went over 40 listing

i love the genius idea of making baubles from old light bulbs. that really is great :-)

I used to book a table at local craft fairs (ok, so, many moons ago now) and they were not that expensive; certainly no more than a Boot Fair pitch at that time. Actually, it was at a local craft fair that I met Bob Geldoff - one of his children (very young at the time) ran off with something from my table :heehee:
I used to go to them at weekends because I worked all week (and crafted during the evenings and those weekends when I wasn't selling at craft fairs). I enjoyed it so didn't find it draining.

Congratulations to your Aunt, Dips :yay:
