Gothilda just does that. I can take my feet off everything, no handbrake, and just sit on a steep incline (although I must admit I usually hold her on the brake til we're ready to move). Then when the time is right, I just press the accelerator and away we go.

That one works on mine, and much better than the Passat that went before it.

In fact, the auto lights and auto wipers work well too - its just the bulbs are a pig to change

I learnt to do Hill starts from my driving instructor, [when driving lessons were 17 shillings and sixpence:hate-shocked:.....75p to those who've never had the pleasure of a sterling pound of 240 pennies which bought more than the present pound of 100 pence does today]. He was a Justice of the Peace, a chain smoker, and told me when taking my test that he'd had 9 pupils pass in succession and should I fail, as I would be the tenth, and ever come up in front of him he'd have me "inside" even if it was for loitering!!:hate-shocked: So I always paid attention to his instructions when learning to reverse down a one car wide country track, or doing hill starts:heehee: I owe that man a lot!!!:love30::snork:

Giving that its part of the driving test, no you shouldn't be driving if you can't do a hill start.

Absolutely agree - the worry is that drivers learning now are increasingly less likely to be able to learn simply due to modern car design

I'm told that some cars don't even have a handbrake lever these days, and not just because its fallen off I mean.

But things move on don't they. You and I can mock the new drivers of today for not having experienced a full lock up in a pre-ABS car, or having to use brute force and ignorance when doing a three point turn in a pre-PAS car, but drivers older than us might equally mock us for not having to change a set of points at the roadside, or adjust a choke, and even older drivers might mock them for never having had to double clutch on gear changes, with a pre-synchromesh gearbox.

When I was learning to drive with a manual gearbox I used to get told off, it was called coasting and an immediate test failure. I'm not sure if it's the same with an automatic though.

No. It would be illegal if at any point the car was allowed to freewheel, which it doesn't, because if its in drive, then drive is always fully engaged. No clutch to slip, no need to balance any brakes. No loss of control.

I consider myself fortunate enough to have gained experience in a number of vehicles from those with crash boxes and hydraulic drum brakes all round, to pneumocyclic boxes, auto boxes, tiptronic boxes, PAS, no PAS (hell, I have even dragged a Decker fitted with PAS back home with a total hydraulic failure so no PAS on a rack designed not to work without it!)

The net result for me is that I am able to cope with various things from failed hydraulics to clutch failures even through to air system failures which necessitate constant increased engine revs even under braking to prevent spring brakes from slamming on. If it's got wheels and a engine, I will give it a go
