So what do we think about the driver-less cars that are due to hit the roads early in the new year then?

I'm not the only sceptical one then? I'm a lousy passenger now so I don't think you'll find me in one.

Is it going to work, I don't think so! These cars are set up so they can't have an accident, so what happens if somebody hits one of them, it'll cause chaos!

Reminds me of when I was a lad in London :heehee:. During the very heavy smog days they used to bring the trolley busses back to the depot by a man walking in front with a flaming torch.

FC, I lived near the Stamford Hill depot :blue thumb:. Those trolley busses were big things and carried 70 passengers.

I had a slow puncture (with the tyre on my car - before I get any funny comments!) and took it to the local tyre place that has been doing my cars for 40 years. It took a while for them to trace the problem and it was leaking all around the rim.

He told me that it is easy to sort out as it is almost certainly just corrosion on the rim which is not allowing a smooth seal. I asked him whether it's worth the cost as I've had the tyre for a long time. He said it doesn't cost much and I have a few thousand miles left on the tyre.

So he puts the wheel on the tyre removing machine and works it to release the air before removing it. I noticed that he was having trouble in getting it to 'pop' in one place and was having to get it to keep trying - moving the metal pressure plate away and then back again. It appeared to me as though he wasn't getting the plate close enough to the rim but it eventually 'popped' and he was able to remove the tyre. I noticed that where the plate had been putting pressure on the tyre the rubber was still bulging inward and he had trouble pushing it out again.

He was correct that there was a lot of corrosion on the wheel and he used a disc to file it down. Then he covered the wheel rim in 'glue' and put the tyre back on. When he inflated it I examined it and saw that there were bulges in the tyre wall and pointed them out to him. He called the boss over (I remember when he was just a toddler and his father ran the business) who looked at it, appeared puzzled, and annoyed, and told him to take the tyre off again. When he examined it he spotted that the rubber was cracked on the inside but not the outside.

To me it was pretty obvious what had happened and I waited to see what the boss would do. He didn't admit that it was their mistake but immediately offered to fit a new tyre at cost (I know they have a fairly good mark up). So I agreed - the tyre didn't have all that much life left. It cost me £73 instead of £114 (on my last bill from eight months ago) and no charge for balancing or tracking.

I thought he handled it quite well but the fitter had certainly made an easy job much more difficult - and expensive. When I drove away I looked in my rear view mirror and the boss was giving the fitter a right rollocking!!!
