Well yesterday I went to the dentist!!!! I also saw a hygienist and had my teeth cleaned, she recommended that I used interdental brushes and also a mouthwash to help prevent plaque build up, I thought that 'Listerine' was a bit expensive so I bought the Co-op own brand of mouthwash, I used it for the first time this morning. Doesn't taste too strong, not unpleasant, but I couldn't taste anything for literally hours afterwards!!!! Are they all like this? does anyone else find it has this effect?

I used one called Corsodyl a few months back, it was unpleasant and after a week I found it altered my taste buds, all my meals had a funny tang, difficult to explain but a sort of metallic taste. So I gave up and gradually my taste returned to normal. In the past I used some with alcohol and they seemed to dry out my mouth.

My dentist said I should be flossing every day but I found it was taking me ages, until I found these which are brilliant:

That Listerine stuff (and its spawn in various lurid colours) is vile and I think unnecessary for daily oral care. I think it is yet another product to flog us to boost company profits! Never had a dentist recommend it.

Flossing regularly is essential in my books.
I'm not one for gadgets but I think an electric toothbrush is much better than a manual toothbrush for oral hygiene (get a good quality one like Oral B).

There are some nice homemade mouthwash recipes online which use natural products (peppermint oil and bicarb for instance) but I think they are more for fresh breath than anything.

Yes I have been told to use an electric toothbrush so I bought the Oral B one, apparently if you are a smoker (which I am) you won't know if you get gum disease because smokers gums don't bleed!! gonna have to find a different mouthwash though I can't see myself using the other stuff long term.
Anyone use interdental brushes? I already floss but apparently the brushes get rid of plaque even better?:dunno:

Val I have used those brushes but only when I had a temporary molar crown and my dentist advised me to use them in a tiny temporary gap that was created. Must admit I found them very tricky to use and often pricked my gums with them (even the expensive ones seem to have a pointy end). I stopped using them as soon as my crown was sorted.
Don't know about the mouthwash solution though. It looks like Sarakan has good reviews and has a lot of natural ingredients, might be worth looking into?

          Good luck!

I was at the dentist last week. He recommended against the use of a mouthwash after brushing my teeth. Apparently it washes away the toothpaste ingredients - so you may as well brush with water.

I can thoroughly recommend Sensodyne Repair and Protect for sensitive teeth. I've just scoffed an enormous bowl of salted caramel ice cream  without a single twinge.

I've used a couple of different home brands which turned out to be to strong, they made my tongue burn, so I use Plax when necessary. There's no need to use it every day Val, once a week is enough and the same goes for the interdental brushes. The brushes can be bent to get to the more difficult areas and if you use the brushes there is no need to use the floss.

Smokers gums do bleed, I prove that point, although I don't smoke very much.

I have a dental phobia and I really had to pluck up courage to go this time :phew: was worth it though as nothing needed doing!!! :)

I use Listerine every morning and find it works for me:dunno:. I buy it from B&M and it costs £4 for a litre bottle which lasts me ages. I find the taste of it reasonably pleasant and you definitely feel the effect of it. I guess it all comes down to peoples personal preferences, likes and dislikes.
