Anyone got any tips for speeding the recovery of smashed up fingers?

A couple of weeks or so ago, while sparring at my martial arts club, I misjudged a block and ended up with a lot of painful swelling in the fingers of my left hand. It was just starting to get better when tonight I offered to hold the brand new, un-broken-in breaking board for someone to attempt to break it with their foot. After several failed attempts, he tried again, missed his target, and delivered the most powerful kick he could muster all the way to the fingers of my left hand. It hurts, but the second finger is physically locked at the knuckle. It moves a bit, but try to get it to cover its normal range of motion and it simply jams, and hurts like crazy if I try to force it. Its like my left hand is now 100% useless.

It wasn't me that missed. It was the other chap. Besides, if I went there I'd come away about £100 worse off financially and not be able to see anything. I've still got a pair of Specsavers glasses someone. I can't wear them on account of I get eye strain and headaches if I try, not to mention wobbling about like a drunk because I have no depth perception with them on.

Sounds painful , I wish I could help with some advice.

Maybe a nurse at your doctors surgery could take a look and advise you??

      Geezers top (finger)tip of the day: Don't go for @Kandy 's option ! :ouch1:

Stick your fingers in hot tea (with no milk or sugar) for as long as you can bear. Works for me.

        Cheers, Tony.

I dunno. It has certainly not been the best year of my life. I was very ill for most of it, nearly dropped dead at one point. But there is no substitute for grit and determination, and following emergency treatment for whatever it was that nearly killed me, through determination and hard work I've built up some hint of strength and fitness, achieved my first ever martial arts grading, and seen my first born child achieve the same. Life is full of challenges. Someone once said to me, no matter who you are, life is always there to punch you in the face and knock you onto your bum, but its getting back up and staring it in the face that defines who we are. I think I've turned it around pretty well really. But yes, roll on next year.

Clueless, I haven't been around for a few months and didn't realise half of what you've been going through lately. Just wanted to add my positive thoughts for a healthy and happy next year (and for the end of this year!) for you and yours.

p.s. I hope you've had it looked at by a professional.

It sounds like an x-ray is definitely needed. To help the bruising clear up you also need some Arnica. Tablets and cream.

Wish you better and have a great Christmas/New Year. :)

I don't think an x-ray is necessary at the moment. Everything moves through the expected range of movement, and its not even that painful now. Rosemary oil is helping to keep the swelling down. Its much better today than it was yesterday. I think I was more worried about it yesterday because the hand that accidentally got kicked (full force, by an black belt instructor, and while I was braced for impact so my hand took the full force) was already still in recovery from a previous accident. But its not so bad today, and no martial arts class now until the new year, so its got 3 weeks to recover with no significant risk of anyone kicking it again:)
