Taxation was introduced as a tempory measure to pay for the Napoleonic Wars.

    Think they're over now.

Here's another idea - if my business failed to do something that then resulted in someone elses property being damaged/destroyed, then my business would be held liable for the costs of reparation (be that directly or through insurance) - - the water companies have clearly failed in their obligations to maintain a suitable drainage system, and the EA have also failed to maintain waterways to a serviceable standard; could there be a case for both to be sued?

Is the Langport Charity Open Match still postponed?

Will any fish manage to get back in the main river channel? (other than going through the EA's pumps)

And will the fish get back in the rivers to spawn, or will they be breeding in the flooded fields this year?

And will the dire circumstances of those suffering from flooding be swamped by media reporting of the Winter Olympics?

Hate the thought of folk suffering from flooding being swamped.

To be honest I have some sympathy for the Guy, Scrungee.:dunno: His property and others in the area were in immediate danger of being flooded and with a locked sluice gate right beside his property and nobody around to open it he jemmied the padlocks and saved his and several other properties. DEFRA admitted in Court that his actions probably raised the flood level in the Village downstream, which was flooded anyway, by only a centimetre or less. The only reason they took him to Court was to deter others from taking the same action in the future. But I think if you are faced with being able to save your House and those of others nearby then you'd probably be happy to take the risk of a £1000 fine.
Let's face it the people who should be in Court to answer the charge of deliberating flooding the Somerset Levels are the very people who took the Guy to Court.........DEFRA.:dunno::snork:
