Have a look at Scottish Flame Flower for something to grow through the hedge. Also hedge wildflowers if you want REALLY messy.

Oh im in love nfrost :-) thank you

Would have to plant it at the end near the shed so its roots are in shade and its not as dry there and the soil is richer and less sandy

Hedge wildflowers sound brill do you know what the best ones are?

I warn thee now, the Scottish Flame Flower can take over a year to germinate. I only found this out after they were delivered. I got mine from T&M for £5 for 10 seeds.

Regarding hedge wildflowers there are mixes you can buy but you may want to be more specific in your choice as plants such as 'Garlic Mustard' and 'Wood Avens' aren't massively attractive.

      Other options here: http://wildseed.co.uk/mixtures/view/12/hedgerow-mixture

        Thank you nfrost

To be honest i was just going to buy a plant rather than seed of the scottish flame flower. lazy i know but im sowing loads this year already

Im really excited now cant wait to get a messy lively hedge. The hedge the otherside of my privet on nextdoors side is growing through to my side and has created a few patches of bluer leaves and it produces berries so its made the hedge look a bit nicer this year.

I forgot to mention you could buy the plants instead of seed, it's obvious obviously! :) Let me know how you get on!

Locally, I've also seen normal trailing nasturtiums going through and over privet hedges which looked really good. They'll pretty much take care of themselves.

Thats a good shout too i did want to add some nasturtiums to the garden as our neighbours in wales have grown some great ones on the wall to the road and it made me want some and i was wondering where to put them but this could be ideal.

We will see how it goes and i will have to remember not to get too carried away else the hedge will look insane but then i do quite like over the top at times
