Good Call Pete  Yes it is :)

You can tell from the sulphation patterns, the black areas that have built up in the areas sheltered from the rain, such as under the string courses :)

Yeah, that was what I was thinking:snork:

You know I've heard the expression Kentish rag all my life.
But it wasn't until now I've bothered to look it up, seems it has been used for the Tower of London to name just one place of note.

              I knew you were :snork:

Not used it myself, but well aware of it as an important building stone in your area and beyond.

Lot of Chalk down your way but it's not much good for building apart from a re mineralised bed known as Clunch :)

I've occasionally seen old buildings of flint.
I'm guessing these come from the layer within the chalk?

                  Yep :)

Flint forms in bands within the chalk, it's mainly reef creatures that have been replaced by silica percolating down thru the rock, you can find sea urchins replaced by it, but mainly corals (we were on the same latitude as the Bahalmas when the chalk was laid down)

Much better building stone, hardness of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, can be broken (Knapped) when freshly dug to give a flatish face, often used in Chequer work in the buildings across the Weald :)

Noooooooo!!!!! The doors have real character .... (look at the top picture carefully and the doors have aged to look like a silhouette of the crucifix)!
