Yes @shiney that is the secret of a warm house , many peoples don`t let air in the house or don`t allow hot air to circulate , it can be many factor that we don`t know .... the problem is when that stuff is inside the wall it`s hard to take it out....

going back to the boiler let look at this

    http://www.mrcentralheating.co.uk/boilers

I used this company few times and had no problem so far , a 24 watt it`s enough to warm up any 3 bedroom house and the avarage cost it`s about £800 for a good one , even if we want to get a 28 watt and burn ourself under the shower avarage £1000 , so if we order the boiler how much can a plumber charge you for 2 hours work (he will make sure will spend all day to justify ) £500 ? £600?

when I read that many of you have payed up to £3600 how do they justify the cost?

ps I`m a Joiner , not a plumber ......I`ve managed to do all the central heating in my house alone in 3 days , no a single pipe is visible, total cost including all £1400 plus £250 to connect the gas and certificate , against an exstimate of £5000 from a plumber .

In our house all internal doors are left open. air circulates throughout the house. As we're a bungalow we don't get the problem of the hot air going to the upstairs rooms.

The most economical way to run a heating system is to leave it on 24 hours a day and set the temperature at a comfortable but low number ..

Sorry Im having difficulty using the quote button so I cant quote the post directly above this one.

Trust me doing the above will save you money ! Look at it this way.. Would you take off from the traffic lights like a lunatic and drive as fast as you can to the next set or would you drive in a nice controlled manner. Which method would use the least fuel to get you there.

If your house has cooled right down to cold when the boiler kicks in commanded by the timer it will work very hard in order to reach the temperature the thermostat is set at. Now many have the stat to high simply because they are cold and cold because the house IS cold so up goes the stat so we feel comfortable again. Timer then goes off and the whole routine starts again..

So its like revving the hell out of your car when you don't need to and it costs around 30% more to do it that way plus the feel good comfort factor is never there.

One of my old customers is an environmental architect. It was some years ago he passed the very same advice to me. I put into practice and the savings were roughly 30%. Since then I have passed on the same advice and so many friends and family have thanked me for passing it on as they are saving money and gaining the feel good factor.

Try it bet it works for you folk !

        Charlie.

Which is exactly what we do :blue thumb: - except our 'comfortable' temperature is not as low as yours probably is!

Instead of trying to click on 'quote' try this:-
Highlight the part of the message you want to quote (or all of it if that's what you want) and a black bubble will appear below the highlighted part. The bubble has two parts - click on 'Reply' instead of 'quote' and it should drop it into your typing area. :)

Didn't know that ... hitting the "reply" in the black box, automatically inserts it in the reply box; hitting the quote, you need to use the "Insert Quotes" button on the bottom left of the reply box.

Either way, it's an efficient and effective way of just getting the parts you want: top job! :dbgrtmb:

I see everyone's point in keeping the boiler on a low heat until it's necessary to heat the house further, but I can't do that. My boiler is in it's own room attached to the back of my home and I access that by having to go outside. I have no thermostat indoors, so there's no way I'll be going back and forth to turn it up or down.

The other benefit from keeping the heating on all the time is because the house is not going through highs and lows in temperature condensation is virtually eliminated.. It's when the two extremes meet condensation is at it's worst .. This can be quite important for people with certain health conditions...

My friends please trust me when I say I am the least computer literate person here. I just can't fathom some of the things people find very easy. I am dyslexic which doesn't help so please bear with in these matters.

I see why you need a wireless thermostat then Sheal, that sounds like a sound investment.

It would be nice John but it doesn't look like it's going to happen yet. The boiler has settled down and is functioning okay at the moment, I think my maintenance man must have disturbed something when he was trying out different things. Time will tell.

A basic boiler service is actually very very basic indeed. One of the things they should do is blow any dust from the burner ant that I bet is what your friend has done. The burner (I'm struggling to find the correct term in my head) is very pressure sensitive and will shut down or hesitate if dust is present as it thinks it cant burn properly .. Its a wee bit more technical than that but Im sure you will get what I mean. Its a good chance that is what has occurred.

Wireless stats are brilliant ! It allows easy control as you can take it from room to room so if the stat is in the lounge you get the required heat in the lounge. The old way could mean the room you are using is the same as where the stat is. For instance in the hallway.. So your in the lounge is cold while the stat is in the hall nice and warm reading the temperature. Hardly ideal.

I found it because I was frustrated using the 'quote' part. Even after I had inserted the quote it kept showing the 'Insert Quotes' at the bottom of every page.

I trust my boiler man and he was here two to three hours stripping out parts, replacing them and then putting the originals back when the issues didn't change, including changing some minor parts that were worn. He also does a thorough service, including the testing of gases and air with a monitor. I stood watching and talking to him for some while, there is know way he 'cheats' on the work he does on my boiler and never has done. :)
