    To be honest, "M", I think that is a line of thought that the Supermarkets would love to exploit in their pursuit of their profits.
    Big Business does not give a fig about their suppliers knowing that Farmers and small suppliers do not have the financial reserves that they have. Their Accountants pursue a ruthless line of ensuring Suppliers are entangled and constricted in contracts that are only advantageous to the Retailers. There are defaults and penalties that the Supplier has to face which are unfair. Indeed, it's only just recently that a Major Company has been exposed for demanding payment from Suppliers just for them to keep the contracts!!
    We do need an Authority, with "teeth", that can ensure that all contracts are fair to both sides and that agreed payments are paid in full by Retailers within the designated contracted time.
    I really don't believe the question is as deep or unclear as you suggest, "M":dunno: In fact, the situation is one that is well known and quite simple. Retailers are using peer pressure to bind suppliers into contracts which they themselves don't keep to but insist the the Supplier does. The Retailers are not reducing their own mark up but squeezing the suppliers and reducing the price the Retailers pay to suppliers. So the answer is simple, the Retailers should pay the Farmers a fair price for their efforts and goods, reduce their own mark up or increase the price of the goods.......simple.:dunno::coffee::snork:

      @M, i would be willing to pay 50% - 100% more if the extra went to ethical/higher welfare farming. Just to put that into perspective though, I only use 2-3 pints a week and don't have to feed a family on a tight budget.

      As far as alternatives go, most of my family are vegan or veggie so I have been introduced to alternatives. I think I would switch to almond milk, if I had to.

          I would have thought that almond milk would be more expensive though? I mean, the machinery to milk an almond must be microscopic! I wouldn't even know where to find the udder......

                Last week it was a £1 for a litre carton(aspro brand) in tesco,also coconut milk and hazelnut milk,i love them all so bought loads,they go great on cereals or in smoothies:):)x

                  Unfortunately we live in a very priced focused world. I hate to see these things like milk being sold for less than the price of water. I also despise the national minimum wage as it has now become "The" wage .
                  Off topic ? Well no not really as those on NMW will buy milk bread and just about everything they can at the lowest prices they can. They have to.

                  It really saddens me to see what this country has become over these last ten years or so. NMW along side zero hours contracts and all the rest of the wee stunts governments have pulled in order to massage the employment figures ..

                  I feel privileged to be unaffected by the above because I'm to old (58) ONLY JUST MIND !! :snork:

                  But my fear is changes to the basics like we are discussing here will continue and spread as time passes.... Lest hope young Charlie is wrong ...............:frown:

                  Yes I do. About a year ago the milkman came to the door trying to get more business. It is actually delivered direct from a local dairy. I pay 79 pence for 2 pints. I could get it from Tesco at £1 for 4 pints, but we were always running out and I was having to do the late night or early morning run to the shop to make sure that we had some for the kids in the morning. I hadn't actually thought about it before, but I do pay more and it does go to the farmer.

                  Incidently I get the daily milk for the tea school at work from Tesco @ £1 for 4 pints, when I drop my son to school it right by Co op and for 4 pints in there it is £1.79.

                  My parents have a milkman but hes now doing milk and more

                  And i have a milkman who takes part in milk and more but as i dont but milk i get the odd delivery of compost or biscuits etc

                  We did all our married life until very recently when they went digital, ie no longer accepting cash/cheques forcing us to order/pay on-line and it kept messing our order up, giving us too much/none or the wrong sort so unfortunately we cancelled. Pity as we had used them to deliver lots of bulky stuff like soft drinks & bread as well. Now we use Tesco home delivery using the £1 delivery slots, it's a lot cheaper and reliable service for us anyway.
