Has anyone got any go ideas on how to keep these bushy tailed American rats off my bird feeders.
I did think of shooting them,
They've just destroyed 2 feeders that a friends daughter bought me.
Hopefully looking for some good ideas.

Try suspending the feeders on elastic, birds are light so it won't affect them but when a squirrel jumps on it it'll get pinged off :catapult:

I use a squirrel guard on my feeder. No squirrels have got past it for all the years I've had it there (they keep trying).

It fits to the pole that all my feeders are fixed to.

As a keen HFT shooter I too considered shooting them. But I just cant bring myself to pull the trigger.. Though the scope they look like rats till you see the tail then the squirrel nutkin factor kicks in..Mmmmmm
My rifles are Target rifles and I do not and never will shoot wildlife !

The bird feeders don't get damaged but, sometimes, the squirrel population gets large enough to start damaging our plants - and they can do serious damage!

Then, I'm afraid, I have to resort to shooting them . It only occurs about once a year.

Before the sad demises of Oscar the cat (who ruled Shineyland) there was never a problem. He guarded the birds, ate the squirrels and rabbits and chased off foxes and dogs - as well as any winged predators.

We're lucky and just have a couple of red squirrels that visit - no greys over here. I like them and think they're just as entitled to the nuts as the birds are

One important factor with squirrels is to watch they do not start nesting in your house. Up in the eaves is a favoured entry point into your loft or under the eaves into coved ceilings if you have them. The damage these creatures can do is incredible ! They actually love the taste of electrical cable ! We have quite a few dancing along the fences but so far none have been seen on the house its self. If they were then steps to cull them would be regrettably put into place ..
