I also thought it could be about receiving money the way the first post was drafted, affecting my posts above.

I know this isn't really to do with Woo's question but as were on the subject of BACS I thought it might be worth mentioning Transferwise it's a great company started by the same people who created PayPal which allows you to send money by bank transfer to a great may different countries for very low fees in comparison to your bank I use it regularly when renewing memberships for different European clubs and also orders from Dutch or German cactus nurseries.

if you use my referral link below your get your first transfer free according to them usually it's a £1 for a small transfer which is a huge saving on Natwest wanted to charge me before I found this site https://transferwise.com/u/be6b

I have used moneygram in the past and, since it consists of a form that you have to fill in by hand, it is possible that errors occur because of that. Or because the post office clerk gets up with the wrong foot and decides that some characters are not readable enough.

Tricky one for me. I use Paypal to make payments via eBay and have used it for payments into my account, but only for small amounts.

I personally would be wary of giving my bank details to anyone.

Is your son posting the stuff? If so he'll have proof of posting and if they are collecting, then get them to sign a receipt saying they have inspected the items and are happy with the purchase.

This should be done every time anyone comes to collect anything from you. It doesn't matter whether they appear to be very nice or even if you know them well.

Always type out the details of what they are collecting, how much they are paying, that they have checked that they are OK and put a space for both of you to sign alongside your printed names. You should each have a copy. This applies even if they're paying cash.

If they want to pay by cheque you should arrange it in advance and tell them they need to wait for the cheque to clear. You also put the cheque details on the paperwork.

To receive money through BACS, which is very safe, you need to talk to your bank. Some banks do it free for private customers, others charge a nominal amount and some are exorbitant.

Whatever you do, always make sure you have paperwork signed by both the buyer and seller. I've handled too many cases where people have been scammed!

If they're collecting the items then it should definitely be for cash as it solves the problems. Still have the paperwork ready. :)

Just to clarify. Giving your sort code an account number is completely safe. With the now out of date cheques we used to and still write your account number sort code and name are all on that piece of paper. So many many people can read it write it down or copy it.

You only give that limited amount of information . NEVER give anything else if its asked for it is simply not required !

I cannot understand why anyone would want to pay to send or receive money ! There is no need ! Banks will charge for Immediate transfers of large amounts for instance a large payment for a vehicle where it would be foolish to go with it in cash. But the safe fast payment method is free !

We live in a world of very low interest rates which for me focuses the mind on all these small percentages.

If I have cash to throw at things I don't need to throw it at I give it to MacMillan nurses...

I have a habit of buying far to much kit and tools for my main interest which is cars and motorcycles. When I do this I sell them on the various forums and donate the money to MacMillan. Folk on the car forums often refer to them as "Charlies Angels" as I do it so often ..

I am very proud to say I have raised quite some amount of money in this way and others over the last few years ! Those exceptionally wonderful people looked after my bestest ever mate right up to when he passed away. I was there right to the end with them. Quite how they do what they do I have no idea.

Apologies for drifting off topic ...
