Water Butt solutions needed

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of anything I could do instead of connecting a water butt to the guttering of the house (no downpipe in the back garden)? don't have a green house or shed either. I do have a small outside 'cupboard' at the front of the house where i could set up a water butt, but no side gate so would have to go through the house with the watering can.

It's not gonna fill very much without a decent catchment area.

Can you run a hose to the bath and syphon out the used water into it?

 

Bathroom is at the front of the house as is the kitchen :(

Just thought it would be good to have a water butt as we are on a water meter.

Absolutely, my water bill was a fortune when I was watering the garden on a meter

So, do you have any downpipes anywhere?

 

There is one right by the front door. I could put one there, just enough space for a slimline one I think.

Have been thinking and wondered if I makeshift a canopy type of thing and have it slope into a water butt as a larger collecting surface.

 

You could rig up some guttering along your garden fence to drain into a butt. If you put a second length about a foot above it you could fill that with soil and put plants in it, it would help disguise the one below.

 

You can get rainwater diverters if you can get to a downpipe, but they involve cutting into the pipe, so no good if you'm renting.

How about some rain chains? You can make them yourself or buy them. Here are some as an example:

Not renting so cutting into the downpipe at the front wouldn't be a problem.

A water butt don't need to be by the down pipe, my butts are 10 feet away, rainsaver on a down pipe and a bit of water pipe from the rainsaver to the water butt, but you will have to secure the wter pipe to the wall etc to keep it level, i do have one water butt which is 10 feet away from water butt and the water pipe goes under ground then back up to the rainsaver but it keeps getting blocked up, so the water pipe from rainsaver to but most be has level as pos

 

Today would have been a good day to have a water butt, it has rained a ton already !! Doggy didn't like going for his walk this morning.

Have a few ideas floating around my head now and would like to get something set up in the next week or two so that I can get started with collecting the valuable rain water.

I find any receptacle in my garden, open to the elements, gets filled with water pretty quickly in this weather (buckets, even the watering cans!)

Curious to understand how you only have one downpipe though. Where does the water from the roof at the rear of your property go? Or, does the guttering run to a downpipe on a neighbours property, perhaps?

Hi, The downpipe at the back is in the neighbours garden at the other side, if it was their side but near the dividing fence I would just ask if I could fit a diverter to it and have the water butt on my side of the fence but no it is on the far side :-( Joys of terrace houses, and although I am end of terrace I don't own the land at the side of the house (boooooo to the council and public paths HAHA).

Interesting what you saying though about leaving it open to the elements.... hmmmm, maybe I should just get a water butt and take the lid off and while I think about setting up a larger collecting surface area I can see how much it collect all by itself.... Thinking I need some sort of guard over the top just in case cat jumps up and falls in (or any other little creature).
