Interesting pix, woo, with a sort of grainy appearance (?) ... please may I ask: what does HDR mean?

      Hi " M " it stands for,High Dynamic Range

When you look at a scene, there will probably be a range of how bright things are. We can assign a brightness value to each thing/area...in EVs (exposure value). So for example, the sky might be EV12, the landscape might have areas of EV8, EV6 and EV4. So to calculate the dynamic range of the scene, you take the brightest value and subtract the lowest (12-4) and we come up with a dynamic range of 8EV (or 8 'stops').

Now we need to realize that our cameras are only capable of recording detail within it's own dynamic range. For the most part, digital SLR camera are capturing about 4-5 stops (while maintaining good quality).
So when you go to take a photo of a scene that exceeds your camera's dynamic range...you will have to make a compromise. If you expose for the shadows, the highlights will be blown out (white). If you expose for the highlights, then the shadows will be black with no detail. So it has been our task, as photographers, to make this choice and expose for what we deem to be the most important parts of our scene (or do something to alleviate the problem).

One way to get around this problem, is the HDR technique. (High Dynamic Range). With this technique, rather than choosing one exposure, you take several photos at different exposure values...exposing for the shadows and the highlights. You then use software to take the best parts from each image and combine them into one image, which will have a greater dynamic range than you could ever capture in a single photo.:phew::phew:;)

          Brilliant explanation. :blue thumb:

honest opinion - colour superb :dbgrtmb: but I have trouble looking at the pictures as they hurt my eyes.. It's slightly out of register, similar to 3D pictures and my eyes are very sensitive to it.

          Poor, sensitive, dear!! :heehee:

Good morning Sheal and thank you I have put a poll up in a friendly way just to see what our members think about HDR Images,I guess you will be voting NO:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Bearing in mind that enlarged to a poster size and nicely framed they can look good;)

Sorry, Woo, but although they are much better than they were, they still hurt my eyes as they are still slightly out of register. :) They still have the slight effect of looking like 3D pictures without the special glasses.

Poll is closed now, but I would have most definately had voted yes as HDR to me is merely a tool to aid recording of the shot that I saw in difficult conditions, when I pressed the shutter button.

But HDR photography has been taken in different directions, some prefer to use as the tool it was intended for, others prefer to use it as a tool to create artworks with saturated colours and tone shifts. I prefer the former but I have seen some incredibly well done artwork HDR's, some create quite a "feel" to a photo. HDR artwork effects or "feel" are now also applied to some video too. Here is a you tube vid using HDR

Used as tool, no one can be really sure if its HDR or not

                              Steve...:)
