I promise myself not to ever buy any rizhomas again and today I saw this
I was thinking of how hard has been to find mine in the past and now sold at £2.99
the problem is that I know that they are infected and didn`t even get close , but how many other peoples will buy them and spread the virus again and again .

I've seen those Taylors cannas for sale in other GCs, very tempting but as you say Sal, more than likely will be virused, and with variegated cannas it's even more difficult to know if it's the virus or are they supposed to look like that.

I've a bargain basement tropicana canna from b&q but have decided to have a go from seed too. Soaked them for 48 hours, now in a food bag with some wet cotton wool on a warm windowsill so fingers crossed.
How long do they usually take to germinate, would the bag be better on a radiator?

So are their any ones to look our for which are likely to flower this year if sown by the end of February?

Sorry to disagree with you longk, I would say be careful putting them on a radiator. I suppose it depends on how hot they are, my rads are too hot to touch so no good for me. They need a steady 20/21C (70F) - have you got a max/min thermometer Charlie? I use mine a lot, last weekend scouting out the best window-sills and work-surface corners.

... although I'm mainly interested in its foliage, it's flowers are just a bonus.

JWK where did you get your altensteinii from , 4 years ago I got them from jungle seeds and I had 1 out of 10 germinate , wich the plant was stunning , as unfortunatly end up in the rubbish bin due of the virus , but I still can`t belive how tall it got from seeds .

Good point - near to or over the radiator. I must admit that with the woodburner my radiators rarely cut in now and I forget how hot they can be.
The ones in my last photo are germinating at around 32 to 35°c. The room temp is about 25°c.

If anyone remembers back to early last year when for the first time I thought I'd grow Cannas,I think I bought about 9 rhizomes I thought they looked amazing but little did I know until asking for advice from you all that they were all virused .I'd have just put them out not knowing any difference:doh: just imagine how many people do that. I think the supermarkets and 'sheds' would stop selling them before they end up wiping them out:old:
