Just been browsing the Onion thread  Now I only grow onions from sets . The seeds are obviously cheaper, but it is also often mentioned that seeds grow a better onion. Why is this , as the sets are grown from seed ?
While looking up what "the crook stage" was , I found this onion growers blog - full of info and a very pro set up :dbgrtmb:

With sets you can only buy a limited range of the popular varieties, generally these are good tasting and good storing varieties. Growing from seed there is a much bigger choice, so you can choose the exhibition varieties - which in my admittedly limited experience are milder and not very good for storage. Personally I find sets a much easier and almost foolproof method, I can normally grow enough to last all year from a small bed.

I've just sown a second batch of Kelsae as I only had one seedling emerge from my Jan sowing (seed was a couple of years old). I have some catching up to do.

I did see Kelsae sets for sale when I was looking for seeds, but the mouse here is fat enough already

My onions are restricted to two large pots. I use sets and never manage to grow them very big even after using commercial feed etc: Thing is they keep well and we still have enough to keep us going for a few weeks yet.....happy. I used Picko Bello from Taylors last year. £1.99 for 50 sets.

                  Under my growlamps today:
On the left "Bedfordshire Champions" (sown 25th Jan)
In the middle the solitary "Kelsae" (sown 25th Jan)
On the right about 25 just germinated "Kelsae" (Sown 9th Feb)
