      I opened up the GH and propagators,it was roasting in there in this sunshine then sat and had a cuppa in the sunshine:yahoo:

              Planted out my two new Clematis viticella. Took the opportunity to give them a good sprinkle of Blood, Fish and Bone. Did the same for a few plants, including the new climbing rose which has shoots.

              I moved the one existing Astrantia to where I want it and noticed it has new shoots on already. As has the Sedum I thought had died. The garden is coming to life again!

              Just oven baked some seed compost too, off now to quickly stick a load of Rudeckia, Verbena bonariensis in the propagator, plus some Ricinis communis in pots next to it.

                That is a new one to me ... is that to sterilise it, Jack?
                How long did you bake it for? What temperature? And ... what did you put it in!? Hmm, I suppose you are baking seed tray amounts at a time?

                  I seem to recall (and I have no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong :heehee: ) that Geoff Hamilton sterilised soil by putting it in an old tin bath and lighting a bonfire under it? :noidea: May have been Percy Thrower though :scratch: Either that or I've dreamt it after eating cheese :whistle:

                    Haha! First I'm using soil recipes, now I'm baking it!

                    I'm not sure I did it correctly as it wasn't hot all the way through - probably too much in one go. But the RBGE / RHS recommend one way of sterilising seed compost is to cook it at 170 C for seven minutes. Because it didn't all heat through, I also poured boiling water over the top to finish any nasties off. Microwaving would work too.

                    To be honest, this probably isn't necessary as most seed compost will be sterile. But as I've had a repeated damping off problem I'm going overboard to prevent that. I don't want to be a seed sowing failure :D

                    (I'm embarrassed to say I used our casserole dish!! I know I know - my other half would kill me too. But the way is saw it was that it was all sterile and I can clean it rigorously afterwards. I'll get a dedicated tin soon)

                      Well since you brought out your secret about using wife casserole dish where I'm a mechanic by trade and when I fixed my own cars whe I put bits back together I tend to clean it so I know it working, new, easier to go back together not only have I pinched her chemicals and sponges when she not been in I taken parts to the bath and given them a nice clean

                        No complaints in my house. I do all the DIY and use my kitchen equipment in the process. :heehee:

                          Oh and I just remembered many years ago I invested in the worlds sharpest knife with a lifetime guarntee

                          And I can honestly say it is and it's better than my wife global knives how do I know this I have cut an alternator of a car, but pipes, wood you name it I've probably tried to cut it as i have 2 one now resides in my tool box and one in the kitchen draw the knives are now 8 years old and still razor sharp

                            So what's the point in manufacturers producing tools for DIY when kitchen tools work better? I grouted my kitchen tiles with my fingers, it was so much easier than messing around with awkward tools. :)
