Now that is a great free version of the slug pub :dbgrtmb: Must give it a go . According to the video Lager is better than bitter for slug catching. They can have a can of flat Carlsberg , not going to use my Kronenbourg 1664 !

I've found snails much easier to get down. Barely any sign of snails at the mo whereas last spring they were everywhere. Slugs on the other hand (and caterpillars) are another matter.

I do feel bad killing them I have to say, but it's a necessary evil.

My heucheras have been absolutely ravaged by caterpillars- I found 4 of the little blighters on one of them today. I'm trying to garden organically, but the temptation to reach for insecticide is strong!

I think there are some organic pesticides that will only kill certain types of insect. Eg I think fatty acid based sprays will only kill insects on contact when you spray them, so no residue. I could be wrong. But if true that means it's possible to be selective with aphids and caterpillars. It'll be better in mid spring when there is so much growing the damage will be less noticeable (I hope :) )

I'm keen to hear feedback on this new invention @Lolimac

Was wondering, does anyone have any qualms about duffing slugs en masse?

I had an explosion in the population of slugs late last summer- huge ones too. I started off with pellets, then switched to pouring boiling water on them, by the end it was chopping them in half with secateurs.
My delphiniums have finally reached 1 litre pots but I dunno if I've got the guts to plant them out! :heehee:
One plant even got munched on the top shelf of the greenhouse staging- how?!:yikes:

That's the bit I'm not looking forward to .I'm not used to collecting them up ,I usually do the 'trowel flick' in the direction of the chooks:chicken:

It sounds like your slugs were getting bigger and bigger! Next stop, axes and shot guns.

I am going to put some beer traps out to try and keep the slug population down- I'll let you know how useful (or useless) they are!

Don't worry, it's old bottles that were in the shed from the last owner. No drinkable alcohol will be harmed in the making of these slug traps!

I was surprised to hear Monty Don say (in a programme last year) that he slings the slugs over his garden fence! I think he corrected that in the next programme in some way.... "busted"
