To be brutally fair, FC - if this issue only occurs for members when they use GC, but not when they use the plethora of other web sites out there ... the question begs to be asked: why should we "invest" in other apps/software/gadgets/routers/et al just to get a "normal" service?
Equally, money spent on gizmo's just to get an acceptable performance for GC means (in real terms) the less finance users have to donate to the on-going needs of running GC!
And, by that same token: where is the lure for a member to "donate" to the running of GC if, as a user, they are continually encountering server issues with the site? :noidea:
Equally: where is the advantage to making a donation at all when, even if you do not, you have full access to anything anyway! There is no advantage, no special members only arena ... and ...

... the forum still lags! :dunno:

        OK,

I might be utterly wrong here, as this is on the fringes of my knowledge, but this looks like something amiss in the DNS lookup/DNS routing to me:

        gc tracert.png

I have alerted this post to highlight it for discussion in the office.

I will see if I can find an alternative DNS server that might help alleviate things, but please bear with me - as mentioned above, I really am on the limits of my knowledge here

I agree @"M", however, as I was typing my response to Sheal thinking she was the only one still suffering problems, I then clicked submit to see that yourself and Jack had posted too. I was operating purely on my recent experience.

As mentioned above, I have flagged this for wider discussion, and am going to research more reliable DNS servers as I have a suspicion that this is where the problem lies. Essentially, every website has an IP address which is a bit like a mobile phone number - when you type the website address, that address is then looked up against a global database of domain names (the DN of DNS, the S being Server), the server then redirects your 'call' to the relevant IP address.

Whenever a website moves servers, particularly if it moves country, this can cause some of the less reliable DNS servers problems in routing the traffic, as it is still looking for the website server in its old home, and then has to be re-directed.

I'm not a techie by any stretch of the imagination. But, does "request timed out" mean the same as a run-time error?
Which brings me back to: software updates.
What if: individual user PC's are getting software updates/upgrades from the biggie, global, techie machine. What if: the software GC uses to run the forums is a day, maybe two, *behind* the individuals update notifications?
Could that be causing a lag for some users?
The assumption will always be that the GC server is running the most up-to-date software .. but, what if it might be a day (or three) behind? Could that be causing issues? :dunno: If it is behind, then unless all users have cleared their cache, could it cause a conflict? :noidea:

Right, now don't shoot the messenger......

I have found the DNS I used many moons ago when having issues with DNS lookup on other sites, and it cured the problem completely for me. It requires a couple of settings to be changed on your PC (each one you wish to use), and other than that you would never notice that much of a difference (with the exception of hopefully being able to connect to GC without grief).

This is not a cop-out, neither is it the full solution - - it is however a suggestion for a cost-free workaround that may help. Whilst it has been a while, I am happy to try and guide anyone that needs through the process (by email, if that means no lag in the conversation).

EDIT - it might have helped if I remembered the link

                You are blessed :pathd: :love30:

PS: in my instance, the issue only became apparent when I logged in this evening (at a similar time to Jack Mc! - not sure about Sheal ... but then she is a law unto herself ;) :heehee: )

                My service elsewhere is fine,
GC is just as exceptionally fast (158Mb connection) just this evening GC and only GC is slow or timing out SOME of the time

OK - I have just changed the settings on my router and PC to use OpenDNS following their website guide, and it was dead easy. I cannot say that I have noticed any change, but then again I wasn't having any issues to begin with

FC. I'll work through your post bit by bit as my quote's not working again.

The fan staying on only happens on Firefox, it rarely cuts in on IE.

Wi-Fi issue.....The only thing I can think of here is that my router may be past it's best. Last year I had to change channels on it which helped. However, my husband doesn't have any problems when using his laptop. But as I said in my last post these problems seem to become worse each time GC has a server change.

The list you provided, CCleaner etc. has all been tried and makes no difference. I back up regularly to an external drive.

ISP.... sorry FC I'm no techie do you mean my broadband supplier?

I've just had a complete breakdown here. I'd gone off to a link via GC and the whole thing scrambled. I was looking partly at GC and partly the website link and then my computer crashed and I had nothing but a completely white screen, I couldn't raise an internet connection for a while either! 'Scuse the language but what the hell is going on?! Help me please before I disappear into the ether!:)
