@Sheal - ISP is your broadband provider. I think there is more than one issue at play here for you.

I do think that there is a DNS issue for GC, but it is not affecting everyone; if it is as I think, then the OpenDNS workaround should make life much easier.

I also think you have a wifi problem, and possibly your router is feeling unwell. You don't need to spend a small fortune on a router nowadays, you can get a decent one for around £20 and a real cracker for less than £60 (I am dead chuffed with my new TP-Link Archer C2); the fact that you could not get any internet at all after the last wobbler suggests to me a router or modem issue, especially if the PC ramps up its fan whilst using Firefox as it is trying its best to connect for you and failing.

Firefox being 'resource hungry' is a known (if rare) problem. I believe the solution is to un-install and reinstall Firefox. Alternatively, try Chrome or stick to IE; I am not sure if Opera is still on the go nowadays - it used to be one of the 'lightest' browsers going, but it was a bit 'geeky' to use (not user friendly)

Oh, and a couple of other things - if you have your router or modem close to a cordless telephone base it absolutely destroys wifi (and I mean completely) - - move them apart by a good few feet and the change can be dramatic. Microwave ovens and wireless heating thermostats/controllers can have a similar effect.

Also, if switching channels helped, it might be that your neighbours have a router that is sitting right on top of yours on the same channel, and maybe its 'lungs' are a bit clearer than yours and it is shouting louder. There is a wee free program called InSSIDer that will show you on a chart all the wifi signals that it is seeing nearby, and what channels they are on.

Thanks for your help FC. Regarding the router, what I don't understand is why my other half doesn't have any issues and he's sitting here beside me on his own laptop....and again I only have problems when on GC. It all works fine on any other site when on the web.

My telephone is ten feet away from the router, that's the furthest I can get it and that goes into the same connector as the router in the phone line socket.

I'm on Manxnet by the way, the only provider here on the island and the only one we can connect to.

Have you asked him to go onto GC at the same time and see whether he has the same problem?

You're welcome @Sheal - we will get to the bottom of it one way or another.

If your other half is having no issues at all, that shifts the focus back to either your laptop or what is happening when you are connecting to GC, and as you have no other issues, that suggests it is the latter.

I would strongly suggest giving OpenDNS a shot, at least to see if it makes any difference at all.

Back on IE and the quotes won't work as per usual......

That's a good idea Shiney but that means he'll have to join GC and post on a thread or two. Somehow I don't think that'll happen!:)
