    Hi Restar,
Toby doesn't belong to us but we are close friends with his owners and will be keeping in touch/ bonding whenever we can because we will be dog and house sitting in August when they go off on an 11 day holiday. He's no angel and "goes very deaf" when called if he's spied another dog to run off and play with. He's 9 months and 40+kg and and strong as an ox. I cannot restrain him on a lead. He gets fed up with constant correction I think - just like kids but they are determined to train him through school for the first 2 years. I have much admiration for those who take canine ownership seriously,
    Jenny

Jenny, Yes a GSD is smart, he will let you say 50 times the command "sit" unless you make him sit. The running after another dog to play with cannot be corrected in the run. The correction is done before his brains says "run". Its a matter of watching his head, eyes to give the command "No". Once the run begins the only thing you can do is go and get him, even correction there will not work, they do not get it at that point. When your out walking him on lead--you need to do this : He should be trained to walk on your left side, left hand holds some of the lead . To encourage him to walk at heel, you pat your left hip and "joyfully" say heel, start out with your left foot to begin. Keep the lead short so he is close to your side. Walk about 5 feet then make a quick right or left turn, again patting your left hip as you do that turn. Walk another 5 feet do the same, and again. Go down the street for a bit, and start again. Remember each time you turn you pat your hip,--joyfully/firmly say "heel" and move. A GSD can get board when just walking straight for too long, especially in the early months with the heel is not firmly in his head. Doing a square turning keeps him wonder what your going to do next. As he is heeling correctly either on turns or straight --then say "Oh good boy", if he misses the heel position, don't correct at this point, do another pat and square. He will pick up that for good position he gets Atta Boy, and for drifting he gets nothing. And talk to him when your walking, "really". That will keep his attention on you. Added suggestion, to go with your neighbor to a dog class to watch and learn along, a dog that size and intelligence needs a firm hand for that time period. So glad his mom/dad are taking him to school for the first 2 years. He will certainly develop into a socially appropriate young man.

Their coats do take some looking after, I used to do my dog's myself and strip her completely in summer, by the time I'd finished she looked like a lamb. :)
