Would it be possible to chisel out a depression that you could fill with soil?

 

That would be brilliant Woo! Do you have a mallet and chisels? That would be how I would do it but someone else may be more experienced... You could help it along by drilling holes to aid the chisel work too. Good luck, it will look very good

 

I am so majorly behind with cleaning out my gardens. The snow has prevailed for so long. Finally its all melted but now we have rain all weekend. No sign of drying out anytime soon. My early bulbs need raking the leaves out near them. So frustrated . Usually by now, the main/oldest garden is cleaned out and done.

 

This is the small hedge I'm debating on removing, still got to remove the conifer stumps
Planning on planting a large bamboo, basjoo, datura, salvias and the trachycarpus waggy in the bed.

 

Planted up some Charlotte potatoes in large pots. Three to a pot in compost consisting one part each loam, garden compost, leaf-mould and cheapo MPC plus a hand full of chicken pellets.

I've just weeded one of my front beds, it's full of ruddy ground elder & drives me potty, but it's NOT going to beat me!
Hubby is pressure washing the fences, shed & hard standing around my shed. Doesn't look like I shall get those painted this weekend as they willbe too wet but at least they will be ready .
Now going to sow my peas, I got the plot ready for them last week. Such a fantastic timeof year my clematis is shooting at the back of the house & I have a few delphiniums just popping their heads through. .

Sowed some Salvia seeds and bunged them in the prop. Noticed that the Cobaea Scandens seeds which hadn't been soaked are showing some movement. Went out into the garden. It feels a lot colder than 6C in the wind. Worked out where all the new plants will be going and which containers will be moved to where. Noted it all down in my dairy even though I know I will probably change my mind. Top dressed some more pots and then came inside to thaw out.

 

Just cut back our two Viburnum tinus standards pretty hard, leaving just a small ball of leaves on each. I've given up hope of flowers this year and growth had started. I won't leave the berries on next time as I think that stopped this year's flowers.

I think it would make a great "walk behind" for your new bed so you have access to maintain/manage the new beds from all four sides: so, yes, remove it

 

Hoed and added compost to my bed in the back garden. Have planted in some sweet pea, primrose, lupin and 'mystery plants'.

Doesn't look like much now but hopefully in summer it's going to be full of colour

 

@Sarah Giles - great work! And two lovely helpers to speed things along too. It's going to look stunning Have you prepared your stakes for the sweet peas yet?

 

We've put some bbq skewers around the for the time being til they're a bit bigger

 

Cold? Nah. Spent. Lovely 5 hours out in the garden today. Very productive.
Potted on about 20 various things and threw out some crappy T&M plugs which hadn't made it through winter. Looks like most of the echinea have but they're absolutely tiny. Have top dressed them with fresh compost as it had gone green.
Doubt I'll be able to plant them out this year. Here's a comparison with an Aldi bare root which was potted up 3 weeks ago. Embarrassing isn't it?

After that I had a tidy up in there and potted up the rest of my dahlia tubers. Feels so good to have that job out the way. Have given them a water and will now leave them til (if!) I see growth. Finger crossed!
Then I had a huge garden tidy up, cleared the pampas green a bit, picked up stray twigs, cut back ivy over the path and hoed all the weeds which have popped up. Very pleased with.
Finished by sweeping the patio and putting more soil in the propagator to warm up. Might try bringing (sneaking) a couple of dahlias into the house tomorrow to hurry them up a bit
Oh I also found some agapanthus seed heads blowing around the garden (from last year ) and lo and behold they still had some seeds in so I've put them to one side for when I fancy trying them out.
All in a fantastic day and really proud of what I've achieved. Off to add some photos to my thread now.

 

A bit too cold today in the tropic of Wigan .Gave the front lawn its first hack down + a spray of mosskiller/lawn tonic . Retired to the garage ,to avoid permafrost ,and potted up 6 canna rhizomes. Rewarded myself with a shower and a beer(San Miquel ) , a good day
