Starting to feel a bit better now and did one battery's worth of grass mowing. Was lovely out there with lots of daffodils opening and a dark leaved prunus with dainty blossom. Quite mild too. Oh and the dark blue petunias are popping up in their seed tray :-) I love them for their scent, just hoping these will be well endowed in that department... Normally the dark blue/purple grandiflora ones seem to be, so I decided to do them from seed this year. Usually I spend ages in a garden centre making a selection by sniff test :heehee:

I achieved absolutely nothing as well Harry. A visit from my eldest offspring this morning and five hours skyping with my other two put pay to that. :)

Not much done in the garden yesterday, wasn't feeling too good (self inflicted).

But, I did manage to get out today and start planting up a new bed in a shady spot. Fatsia, gunnera, banana and numerous ferns. Didn't realise how many ferns I had!

On a dull, overcast day with a nagging, cold northeasterly wind I needed a job that would keep me warm, so I tackled the job of changing the soil in the greenhouse.

As I barrowed the soil backwards and forwards between the greenhouse and the veg patch, there were none of the usual neighbourhood sounds of people enjoying their gardens on a Sunday afternoon. The cold, grey weather, it seemed, had driven everyone else back indoors.

As I laboured to and fro with my wheelbarrow and spade, working up a good sweat in the process, I felt that slightly smug satisfaction and feeling of contentment we gardeners sometimes get from knowing you are out in the fresh air doing something 'useful', while most other people are sitting indoors glued to their computers, TV screens or whatever.

Yes, it was grey, cold and felt like the depths of winter. But I was warm, content and I was getting some good exercise. I had an inquisitive, perky little robin to keep me company, the hens were contentedly scratching around nearby and the first daffodil of the spring had opened up under the old apple tree next to the veg patch. A pair of rooks cawed and busied themselves nearby in a neighbours tree, collecting twigs for nest building. Nature carried on.

The simple pleasures of gardening. :)

Planted out some Salvia Cardonna, Helenium Ruby Tuesday, Penstemmon Rich Ruby and Anchura Azurea Loddon Royalist. Tidied up a bit round the flower beds but was too cold to do any more

Spent yesterday afternoon out on the allotment, 4 hours of digging eek, today went to the garden center to get some more seed compost, then round to MIL's, then back home checked and watered my plants in the greenhouse, still amazed at to what has survived the winter...

Tomorrow, starting some more seeds off, and now I've got my thermometer for the greenhouse, I will start noting low/high temps..

Hoed and prepared another flower bed. Haven't been able to put any compost on as I've run out and am skint at the mo. Didn't stop me planting on some gladioli bulbs though.
The chooks also loved the worms I kept finding while I was at it!

Set up growlamps in my greenhouse and moved my onion & canna seedlings under them (from the indoor setup). Also started chitting my second early and maincrop potatoes.

I know it's not compost but can't you get horse manure for nothing? :) A number of farms and stables around here let you come and take as much as you want. We've had 40 x 70 litre bags already this year. I keep the compost bags for that.

If the manure isn't quite ready for going straight on the garden it goes into my compost heap.
