My Bedfordshire Champions are 160mm and Kelsae (sown much later) only 90mm.

It's very useful information Scrungee, I hadn't thought about measuring them in this way to monitor their growth. We can now compare each others progress too.

Until we get onto the really exciting stuff when we measure onion bulb circumferences every few days

        I forgot about leaf counting!

My largest plants now have 4 leaves, the shortest ones still only have 3, this doesn't include the first leaves that showed after germination as those have now withered away and have been removed. The more leaves they have by the time the bulbs are swelling is supposed to affect the final bulb size.

I need to create some supports like the ones shown above. Has anyone got any tips?

Hiya Craig, you could try something like this....
Basically, I used split canes and soft wire. For each support I took two lengths of soft wire and formed a circle around a 5" pot, twisting the ends. Then it was just a case of popping in two split canes into the pot containing the onion plant, and offering up the ring, and twisting the soft wire onto the canes. Hopefully that makes sense :blue thumb: With hindsight, I would have used a larger pot to form the circle, maybe 6"?

I don't grow onions anymore, but this is how I used to support them when I did.

Pricked out all mine, still only two leafs. I've split them into two batches as I've run out of room indoors. The best ones are under my growlamps indoors. The other half are in my greenhouse and will have to take their chances, I've grown too many but don't want to discard them.

These are the indoor ones, Kelsae on the left and Bedford Champions on the right (plus a few Cannas and tomatoes for company):

I'm going to need to raise my lights very soon

Thanks @Billybell for that clip idea in post #99, I've just made a trial version myself using a cable tie and think they are extremely cheap and easy to make, easily adjustable in size, capable of being extended by 'daisy chaining' another tie and can be stacked on the stick then raised/extended as required. I'll probably try them for the next size up pot before I begin using big wire supports made from fencing straining wire.

Moved all my Kelsae and Bedfordshire Champions into the greenhouse today under another set of growlamps. They were not doing much indoors I think it has been hot for them. I hope the cooler conditions in the greenhouse will suit them better. I'll take a photo when I get chance.
